What Airlines Fly Into Chad? (Airport Code NDJ)

Tue Dec 06, 2005 3:57 am

Hi All,

I'm trying to book flights for a church mission trip to Chad, and I'm finding that flights on Air France into Ndjamena (NDJ) are prohibitively expensive (close to $2000 per from LAX). Do any other airlines fly into Chad? Thanks for any ideas or options.

You could try Ethiopian. There are other airlines, smaller local carriers; they are probably cheaper, but would you want to fly them, but really, I think AF would be the best option. If you want to go to such a long way away - and in fairness to AF, it is a long way from LAX to NDJ (over 8,000 miles), wouldn't it be best for the sake of peace of mind to fly with a decent airline, one which you could rely on to get you and your bags safely there and back. Sure, AF can have its bad days (YYZ, last August), but if I were doing it, AF would be my choice.

And you can stop off in Paris for a few days!

(With Ethiopian, you could fly from Washington to Addis Ababa, but you'd have to stay overnight and you'd be overshooting NDJ by about 1600 miles east. A bit messy, all things considered, but not a bad airline.)

Look into Swiss or SN Brussels. I believe both have extensive routes to/from Africa. Also look and see if Royal Air Maroc offer any service. It may be difficult finding anything right from LAX. You may be best off looking first at European hubs and then trying to connect from LAX to the hub and on to Chad that way.

Good luck!

Your profile says you are located in LA, but I assume you are not a US citizen based on your Micronesia designation? I may be wrong on this, but I don't think US citizens are allowed to travel to Chad.

What ever the case, best wishes on getting the missionary trip accomplished!

Contact a travel agency that specializes in Missionary Travel. My cousin is a missionary in Brazil and they got him a Portland, OR - Recife, BR ticket for less than $600 when the retail fares were over $1500.

I have considered flying to Ndjamena too but been put off by the expensive AF fares. Trouble is too few airlines serve Chad and the country does not have an international flag carrier of their own.

I would love to see a Chad Airlines operating a 737-7 to Paris and other destinations. Both Mauritania and Senegal have been very successful with operating a single or couple of 737-7s and offering lower fares than AF.

There is an air chad. Toumai Air Tchad Code 9D
they fly DC9 service Bangui, Addis Ababa, Douala and Cotonou

Afriqyah flies 2 weekly service from Tripoli, you might want to get a flight to LGW, AMS,CDG or BRU then on 8U to NDJ.

Air Guinee flies into NDJ from Douala
Ethiopian Airlines flies to/from Bamako and Addis Ababa
Next destinations, Suarabaya, beirut, paris, Accra

I hope Air Tchad may look at Air Mauritanie and Air Senegal who have done very well operating a small 737-7 fleet on flights to Paris and have been able to offer very good fares when compared to AF and have been very succesful.

Ethiopian (ET) definately flies into Chad, it used to be one of their stopovers on the ADD-DKR route. I have flown on that route several times. You could fly LAX-IAD-ADD-NDJ for less than $2000 if you buy the tickets in segments (dont buy the entire trip form one airline). ET has daily flights from IAD. Just get lowfare LAX-IAD, then ET from IAD-ADD-NDJ.

Are you sure about ADD being a destination for this airline?

Did anyone forget Afriqiyah of Libya? They do fly to NDJ as well, so the pax would be required to do LAX-FRA/LHR/CDG-TIP-NDJ (don't recall which cities they fly into in Europe).

My advice, contact a travel agent, preferably one in Little Ethiopia in LAX, and get yourself a ticket on Ethiopian Airlines. You might have to do some serious flying, but will be much cheaper than good ol AF (AF is making too much $$$ from the lack of competitive airlines in West Africa). You may be able to get something like LAX-FRA-ADD-NDJ, which would eliminate the need for an overnighter at ADD (which ain't bad at all btw) and avoid the inconveniences of connecting in a US airport. A friend of mine flew YVR-FRA-ADD-NDJ and did not mind it, and even had a day or two connecting at ADD.

Toumai Air Tchad operates to BGF, DLA, COO, NIM,BZV and AEH (Abecher) as only domestic destination, wonder if they will start flying to SARH soon.
just fly - it is nice

If it's a fairly small group you might make an appeal to Exxon to let you fly for cost or maybe free on their fairly frequent charters. Their employment cycle is 28 days, but I no longer know how many cycles a month they operate.

They used to fly from Houston to N'Djamena with a stop at Bordeaux and then use a smaller plane to shuttle folks to Doba, their main drilling camp.

They do not serve ADD.

The best way o travel on ET would be LAX to either, LHR, LGW, FRA, FCO, AMS, CDG and the catch ET to ADD and on to NDJ. This way your connecting time in ADD with just be about 2 hours each way. ET serves NDJ 3 times a week from ADD non stop.

AF would be the most reliable/direct option.

But I would noy rule Afriqiyah out.

Forget about the small African carriers like Air Guinee or so. That is the best advise I could give you !!!
The only Africa carriers I would take without hesitating are Air Sénégal, Kenya Airways and Ethiopian.

As a matter of fact, Ndjamena is an expensive destination.

You are wrong. Americans can definitely travel to Chad so long as they have the appropriate visa.

On the other hand, the suggestion of traveling through Libya on Afriqiyah is not a good one since it probably won't be easy. You would need a Libyan visa for this and there is no Libyan diplomatic representation in the US that issues visas. You would need to travel to a third country and then the process can take a very long time.

he would not need a visa as he will spend just under 2 hours at the airport. unlike other countries where u have to get transit visas and can take up2 3-4 weeks to issue

This is the best bet by far because you would avoid an overnight in ADD - you could shoot right through LAX-Europe-ADD-NDJ no overnight anywhere.

Call ET's 800-number and see what the have to say. You could also try Skyview travel in New York - I've heard they do a lot of business with ET. They have a website but I can't remember the address.

Better of dealing with a travel agent, since price appears to be an issue.

Look up "Lion of Judah" travel agency in Los Angeles, whom I have dealt with and received exceptional service, or as AF022 mentioned, Skyview at http://www.skyviewtravel.com/
