Plane Takes Unscheduled Stop In MCO

Tue Dec 06, 2005 8:24 am

Details are sketchy but I heard either a Untied or a US Airways from Nassau International Airport (NAS), Bahamas to Charlotte - Douglas Airport (CLT), NC United States took an unscheduled stop in MCO b/c 6 passengers felt sick on the aircraft. When it landed the 6 pax. Were taken off board and 1 was sent to a local hospital then the flight continued on to Charlotte - Douglas Airport (CLT), NC. The aircraft will be taken out of service and investigated to see if the aircraft had anything to do with the pax. getting sick.

If you know anything let me know.

Maybe they went diving too soon before flying? Or all ate at the same food stand in Nassau or something.

Airsickness on it's own is very rare these days, even with turbulence.

Out of all 3 reasons you gave, that one sounds like the most reasonable. I think if it had something to do with the plane that more people would've gotten sick.
I don't have an attitude problem. You have a perception problem

If it was to CLT, it was most definitely USAirways.

Looks like this story needs a kill attached to it...all four flights US Airways flies from the Bahamas (both Nassau and Freeport, to Charlotte, Philadelphia, and Washington) were on-time (within 14 minutes) for both yesterday or today

Nassau has only one food cafe in the departue lounge. There-fore a lot more flights than US would have been diverted if it was food poisoning.

DCS or Decompression Sickness. This seems the most likely reason as only six people were affected.

Very true and could probably be the reason for the diversion.

Basically you get the bends.

Bends is a sickness divers can encounter when they surface to rapidly after a long duration dive at an extensive depth. Basically while you are diving the nitrogen in your body compresses. This is not a bad thing, but ascending too rapidly will not give the nitrogen anywhere to go or be absorbed back into your body, so being trapped it expands and causes sever pains. It mostly occurs in ones joints.

Now if you dived and came back to the surface using the correct technique you should have no ill effects. However there is another warning that must be followed, and that is no flying between 24-72 hours after diving, because eventhough you are ok at sea level, nitrogen could still compressed and is slowly being absorbed into your body. If you fly, and start to climb you get a VERY nasty expansion of those nitrogen pockets, and they are excruciatingly painful..

Hope that helps.

C6/UP doesnt fly to CLT, but their DASH-8's stop in RDU on their way to/from Canada for maintenance.

America West (HP) doesnt fly to NAS, US Airways does maybe you were referring to them since HP merged with US  Smile

O yeah UA only flies to IAD(so far {wink) ) from the Bahamas (using their own metal)

The HP and UA were most likely codeshares, but still the same US metal.
