Aerolineas Argentinas Strike Aborted...... For Now

Thu Dec 08, 2005 1:11 am

Hi All

As a very recent new member and with my desperation to participate in a forum I may well end up owing apologies for writing old news SO in advance sorry!!

Anyway, I have not seen too much info in the forums about the recent Aerolineas Argentinas pilot and ground staff strike action but basically up until last Friday for over a week Aerolineas pilots and ground staff staged a strike over pay conditions and brought Aerolineas to a total halt. Austral (Aerolineas partner company) honored their flights but anything and everything with an Aerolineas badge stayed well and truly on the ground whether here in Bs As or Madrid, Rome, Auckland..... You get the idea.

Luckily after negotiation they ceased striking and Aerolineas is now flying all its flights but of course there has been tremendous chaos and backlogs of passengers from all over the world who have been stranded here in Buenos Aires because to the best of my knowledge Aerolineas offered no alternative in terms of flights etc (apart from a military hired for a few domestic routes).

Anyway this agreement is only good for 90 days (from Friday 2nd December) and there is of course a chance that they may strike again ( there is no way of knowing) or of course carry on as normal.

This posting really is just a little 'heads up' to any person thinking of booking or indeed has a reservation with Aerolineas for the new year - make sure you keep in touch with them for updates.

Note:- Aerolineas were and are giving FULL refunds to abandoned passengers but I don't think that was the case if you were stranded here - I mean you just had to wait for the strike to stop!!

Cheers

Mark

I am sure they are waiting for Christmas/New Year week to strike again.
Good for AR reaction, too bad for the pilots association and ground staff.
A shame.

I really dont think they will strike again because this 90 agrement is VERY formal, countersigned by the unions and government so an xmas strike would suprise me even for Argentina!!!!

As an aside note that is interesting, all of the staff they fired ( around 337) have rejoined the company as part of this agrement......

What are your thoughts on Aerolineas taking a stance and firing these guys who just refused to work and then 'unfiring' them again...... does this mean the pilots could have too much control???
