Bmi To Launch DOH Services?

Thu Dec 08, 2005 9:42 pm

Just read on the a.net news headlines that BD is embarking on more LHR expansion:

"March" = new daily service to Doha
22 April = Mumbai goes daily
23 April = 3 weekly Jeddah

To me, this equates to all 3 A330s now being moved to LHR, so what becomes of MAN-ORD? They'll need to get either a 4th A330 or lease in a 767 or UA steps in. The LAS/BGI/ANU services would appear to have no equipment for it, so either a 767 is leased or VS is going to come in and base a 2nd 744 at MAN to operate this routes.

will the DOH flight actually be operated by BMI , or will it just be a codeshare on QR ( which already codeshares with a number of other Star airlines such as TG / LH etc and is rumoured to be heading towards Star membership )

...ooops - just answered my own question

http://www.flybmi.com/bmi/en-gb/abou...essreleases.aspx?year=2005&rid=823

bmi will also commence a daily service to Doha from Heathrow in the Summer of 2006. The service will commence on 26 March and, subject to government approval, will be operated under a wet lease agreement with Qatar Airways. At the same time bmi's existing codeshare agrement with Qatar Airways will be expanded to allow bmi to sell Qatar Airways flights from Heathrow to Doha under bmi's flight code. This will further consolidate the presence of bmi at both Heathrow and in the Gulf region and mark another major step in the global reach of the airline.

The quote is: "BMI said it also plans to launch daily flights to Doha in Qatar next March ". So looks like their own metal.

No, its a wetleased A333.... They have also confirmed the 763 wetlease for the summer.

Doha daily is quite a brave move. AF tried it with an A319 and failed dramatically.

I've just read the memo - very interesting.

Nice to see that they are not depleting MAN of another A330-200. I do hope that the MAN-ORD, LAS & Carribbean services are there to stay.

Actually - The doha route seems like a devious way around the UK Qatar capacity rules. The flight will be operated with a qatar crew, and all the qatar product. Basically BD have leased a slot to Qatar airlines, and are selling the flight as a "BD" flight.... We shouldnt expect any more from BD.

Sneaky sneaky, the kind of thing you expect from both QR and BD.

Kind of frightening that BD are now leasing off their crown jewels - their heathrow slots.... = a further detioration of Heathrow short haul services. Wonderful. What short haul route will be dropped... Madrid, Linate, Inverness?

Daily to Doha in an A330 sounds excessive to me. But this deal has QR dictating matters written all over it. They're getting extra frequency to DOH for little money and risk.

For BD in its own right, the route doesn't really make sense - there's already 4 x daily services from LON to Doha. 1 x BA from LHR, 2 x QA from LHR and 1 x from LGW anbd i don't beleive the O&D market between the two cities is that big. But for QA to successfully use Doha as a hub a la EK in DXB, then they certainly need to feed more UK traffic into it for taking on to other destinations. This way they get the extra frequency they need for some needed additional feeder traffic.

For BD they only really get an additional point on their longhaul network and a bit more cash from QA for their slot at LHR....
Just when I thought I could see light at the end of the tunnel, it was some B*****d with a torch bringing me more work

Probably Inverness, just a guess. I'm sure BD is being compensated nicely for this. I don't know how BD are getting away with this. I'm assuming BD will not insist the planes being reapinted and I'm pretty sure the crews will wear full QR uniforms, so this is a bit of a joke.

Looks like QR are going cut throat in their approach to fight EK.
