Final Approach To BOM: Rooftop Cafe?

Thu Dec 08, 2005 9:51 pm

I flew LHR-BOM with AI (#122; 744 VT-EVB) on the 30th November (the flight took about 7 ½ hours). While on final approach, probably at below 500 feet, I saw a rooftop café or something from which there must be terrific views. Does anyone know anything about this or know where I mean? It’d be interesting to know.

Incidentally, my connecting flight, from BOM to MAA (IC 320; does anyone know the reg?), took about 1 hour and 20 minutes and was also fine, although I was asleep for most of it.

Cheers!

It'd help greatly if I actually put which flight number - it was AI640 (but operated by IC) from BOM to MAA last Thursday. The scheduled departure time from BOM was 0315 and the scheduled arrival time into MAA was 0500. It operated from the same terminal from which AI's international flights operate. Does IC often fly using AI prefix?

As a further aside, I was most impressed with the huge amount of parked aircraft at both BOM and MAA - exciting. Shame there doesn't seem to be any decent place from which to keep track of all movements.

Could you tell me which runway we landed on and took off from at BOM? The AI mx area (with some AI 744 aircraft and a 742) was on the left-hand side.

Cheers!

That would be the rooftop restaurant (can't remember its name) at the Orchid Hotel.

Great view from the restaurant. But the food's terrible and the service unimaginably worse!

Oh right. Have you been there?

Is that runway most often used for arrivals?

I dunno if I'll bother to go, but if it is a decent place for watching and I could just stick to a lassi or a chai...

Yes, I have been.

If you must go, do so late at night. Lots of traffic and much more variety, instead of the usual 320s, 737s and 310s that you will see all day long.

By the way, have you seen this thread: Should The Mentally Ill Be Allowed To Fly? (by Hmmmm... Dec 9 2005 in Civil Aviation)

People are advocating that you not be allowed to fly!  Wink

Orchid would be on Finals if you're coming from the Sea onto 27 or 32. However, I think since 9 is used for landings most of the time - I really wouldn't want to venture into the slums. Orchid would be great for T/O's though!
That said, if you have a nice room at the Orchid you get a nice overview of the airport, and you can see domestic opns pretty clearly, but the windows are very heavily tinted.
