Interesting quote from the article.... "People watch Singapore very closely; it's a model of experience with premium long-haul service," said analyst Richard Aboulafia at U.S.-based consultancy Teal Group. "Emirates just went with Boeing. If Singapore and Qantas follow, there's not going to be much left of Airbus's wide-body offering in five years except the A380."

Except maybe the A330.

Don't count your chickens before their parents are conceived.

I think there will be an epidemic of irritable bowels and other stress related disorders among Boeing execs as the battle for the Pacific goes on. The humiliation is greater for Boeing if they lose than for Airbus.

SQ is kind of the push up bra of airlines. If they buy your airplane, it makes the other airlines sit up and notice.

The SQ order is not expected until January or February. I think Boeing would prefer to win the SQ order next year rather than this year. Boeing have already won the order race for 2005 and must now be more concerned with winning again in 2006 than with widening the margin of victory in 2005. Wall Street rewards steady, reliable success over wild fluctuations.

Wouldn't it be great to hear what price the airlines have been paying for these large deals recently?

If Airbus sees either the Qantas or Singapore deal as a must win (like easyJet A319 deal) or Boeing sees it like the Ryanair deal then I am sure some really deep discounting will be going on.

The only ones to win will be the airlines who will get a great deal. After all, if you discount either the A350, A340, 777 or 787 to steal the deal the discount can make a huge difference to the economics of the airplane.

I actually see Airbus getting the bigger portion of humiliation pie than Boeing because Airbus has been the one to have led the last 5 yrs or so...and they have let everyone know so also.

US$10BN?

Hint: Thats roughly a third of the TOTAL losses incurred by all airlines worldwide since 9/11.

Do any of you have any idea what US$10bn worth of Boeings looks like?

You'd get a hundred 773ERs for that.

Are they going to order a hundred 773ERs? Are you sure?
What do you mean you dont have any bourbon? Do you know how far it is to Houston? What kind of airline is this???

Bear in mind US$10 BILLION will just about double SQ's total Fixed asset strength, and that includes SIAC as well.

I'd say they are nicely covered with their existing fleet TBH. Maybe a follow-up for the 773ER, and some 748Fs for SIAC but US$10bn?

Somebody wishing up numbers i think.

If you can buy a new B777-300ER for $100M, then I suggest you do so. You can sell it for a nice profit.

Why are they on a shopping spree again? They "just" ordered a bunch of 773ERs...

Because the 787 is supposed to be the better aircraft in all categories but size and the -10 may change that, and the first manifestation of Boeing's future plans. They are going out on a limb in a lot of ways to push things forward, much like Airbus did with the A320 only this time Boeing are going further.

If QF and SQ go for the A350, then that will be enough to push the A350 beyond the 787 order count, despite only being on offer for half as long.

The A350s success at the moment is more than what a lot of people believed earlier this year and so Airbus have already exceeded expectations in that regard and secured the aircraft's future. They don't need either airline to prove their aircraft. The 787 though came in with big expectations and they do need at least one of these carriers.

The situation is reversed for the big ones where Boeing only needs a few orders for the 747-8I here and there to prove their worth while Airbus will need to land the really big deals.

DISCLAIMER: This is NOT A cheerleading. I want the riots outside Paine as customers bundle to get their hands on the Dreamliner. I just have been disappointed with the sales performance of it against the A350 of late since the all-new A350 arrived rather than the warmed-over A330 that it was earlier on. It seems as though there are many competitions that are in Airbus's pocket like the Iberian ones and many that are neck and neck but few that are in Boeing's pocket. It's a sad reflection on the state of this forum, when I have to state this to avoid being accused of A vs B flaming.

Agreed, although Leahy has been seen going to the men's room more often than is usual according to reports from Australia.  Wink

Disagree. The stakes are high for both manufacturers, Humiliation will be thrown around by the A vs B cheerleaders on a.net and other less popular vestiges of aviation talk.

With the gazillions of 777 ordered recently how is Boeing going to have the capacity to make so many of those things? I suppose the delivery time frames for all of those order are all the same from 2007 onwards ~2010?

Actually, about a third of that. 773ER's list for about $225-250Million so, they would get about 40 of them. Prices in news reports are almost quoted in list prices. SQ would never pay that though.

Cruiser/Zvezda - bingo.

If you are ordering 10 billion worth of new 777s - how much of the list price will you be paying? Bear in mind you have a choice of manufacturers.

I'd be surprised if SQ were to order US$10bn's worth - if they were paying much more than US£100m per plane.

They plan on increasing production gradually from 4/month to 5/month and then soon after that to 7/month. I'm not sure about the time frame for the increase though but I'm sure they'll try to do that by mid next year if the supply chain works out.
