Why TUS of all places, why not just go back to LAS or PHX ?

Also one of the DTW-MDW flights looks like flight 2664 past MDW right by to go to MCI and continue to SMF.

as part of Southwests policy, sometimes thru flights would go straight thru instead of making the stop. This is what a lot of flights did during Katrina.

At cruise speeds already... it would have only been about 45 minutes cruise-time out of the way... especially with the big tailwinds today. The only issue I see with it is the weather has been a bit interesting at PIT tonight off and on. At least PIT has plenty of runway if the braking action deteriorates. That's WN's sign to US of their next expansion city actually though.  Wink

That diversion was by yours truly. One of many, mainly to MCI or STL due to IND, CMH, CLE, DTW, and PIT getting snow from the same weather system.

I did have a BUF-MDW guy abeam CLE that I sent back to BUF (so the folks could sleep in their own beds), and the aircraft was then ferried BUF-HOU.

Also had a SDF-MDW-PDX flight that we cancelled, and I ran him SDF-PDX non-stop (not something we fly normally).

I can at least report on these two.. I had pushed 1103 after a 3 hour WX gate hold, it was about an hour away when dispatch called and said it was returning. I assumed it was due to worsening conditions in MDW from the snow, until we heard about the incident. It's final destination is supposed to be SEA, and upon it's return it was planned to overfly. Due to too many aircraft not being where they should, it is now going to TPA in the morning with enough fuel to go to SEA.

Flight 350 is one of our terminators, it overflew MDW after it was already in the air from LAX. It came in with about 115 pax, 90-something of them were MDW-bound. SWA is providing hotel and meal vouchers for all displaced MDW pax tonight.

No, after it came back, we fueled it in prep for an overfly, but someone called and said it would take a while to figure out where all these extra planes are going. We kept the crew around until about 11:30pm local when I checked tomorrow's lineup and saw it set up for a ferry.

And guess where all that snow is headed?

This makes me wonder, how much does this snowstorm cost SWA? Ferry flights, flying aircraft with too much fuel, vouches, damaged aircraft, shut down focus city...

This is just part of aviation in the winter for all airlines but how much does it cost?
