Which Airports Have RW "buffer Zones"?

Sun Dec 11, 2005 3:19 pm

This is quoted from an msnbc site about the SWA incident....

"The crushable concrete beds — called Engineered Material Arresting Systems — are installed at 18 runways at 14 airports. They have stopped dangerous overruns three times since May 1999 at Kennedy Airport in New York."
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10388519/

Which JFK incidents are they refering to (dates/air-craft/airline) and what are the 14 airports that have theses "buffer" zones.

See http://www.esco-usa.com/com/instal.html for some of the airports with installations.

There's also a photo of a Saab 340 that was snagged at JFK. A Fedex DC-10 was also snagged, as well as a 747 freighter (Polar or Atlas, I think). A search of www.aviation-safety.net could get you exact dates.

FLL had them installed within the last year, when you drive by on I-95 you
can see the arrestor bed in person.
