Did Continental Ever Fly Widebodies To Florida?

Mon Dec 12, 2005 2:43 am

I thought I remember somewhere that CO's used to operate routes with the 764 from EWR. Is this true, and if it is, what routes did CO's fly widebodies to Florida. I wish they did today.

While not from EWR, I recall an early 1991 trip IAH-MCO on CO using A300 equipment.

I flew a CO A300 from EWR to MCO on December 31, 1990.

I flew a CO DC-10 from IAH to MCO on June 14, 1998.

MCO saw scheduled widebodies all the time from IAH and EWR. The DC10 use to run IAH-MCO at one point as well as the A300 (which also frequented MIA and FLL). In recent times CO use to run the 764 between IAH-MCO with the occasional 762.

I used to see CO 772 in MCO when they first starting getting these jets. They would come in from EWR.

In the 80's, early 90's we had a great deal of scheduled servce to MIA, FLL,PBI,MCO,even TPA withe the A300.

Later in the decade, we would use the destinations to FL. ie., the B767, and B777 quite often for training in the new aircraft upon delivery. The round trip time from EWR, and IAH, was just right for check out times, 5 to 6 hours.

I remember flying EWR-FLL on an A300, what a horrible aircraft.

The typical Winter schedule for CO from EWR to Florida in lets say 1994 was:

EWR-

MCO 7 Daily A300s, FLL 5 A300s, PBI 2 daily A300s, TPA 1 daily A300, MIA 1 daily A300.

CO also flew A300s from IAH to MCO and MIA.

They fly 757s (200 and 300s) on their former A300 routes to Florida, the last A300 service was in '95.

I've personally flown CO A300s between EWR and MCO (atleast 5 times between '89 and '95).

CO flies widebodies to FL (MCO) alot. There use to be a mid day flight IAH-MCO-EWR flight with widebodies. IAH-MCO-EWR used to be the main training route for CO when they were getting their widebodies.

In recent years:

CO introduced the 777 to revenue service on the EWR-MCO route....so that the crews could gain some experience with the type before it went longhaul.

CO flew the 764 on the MCO-IAH-LAX route for years during the winter, before its huge European expansion.

CO upgrades flights to Florida during high demand periods (think the Christmas holidays).......this past October, on Columbus day, I flew on a 764 from FLL to EWR (CO 1400)......the 764 subbed for a 752 and went out packed.

Aircraft like the 752 and 753 are ideal for services to Florida from IAH and EWR....lots of seats and low operating costs. Also, with JetBlue competing on the Florida routes, CO is more concerned with frequency (ie, EWR-FLL went from 6 to 9 flights per day) and thus they are using small aircraft on some departure. And, as we know, CO does not have a widebody to spare at the moment.

I flew the 767-400ER last year on December 31st from IAH to MCO... Not sure if it was seasonal or what, but it was enjoyable to say the least.

Yes, there is a trend here, as CO has used large jets on and off to MCO at peak holiday travel times.

Something to do with a mouse and his house. Lots of people like to see it, or something.

DLs been known to do the same thing on a regular basis. That must be some important mouse.

PS - I'm going there this weekend, but on CO narrow bodies. Oh well.
