80 Recorded Hijacks Since 9/11

Mon Dec 12, 2005 7:26 pm

I had my flight safety recurrent yesterday, and every year again since
9/11 security is a hot topic. We were asked not to talk about the stuff we
heard yesterday, but what I can share is that since 9/11 there have been
80 hijackings.There's 4 type of Hijackers; refugees,criminals, terrorists and
the mentally disturbed with 60 of the 80 hijacks committed by the latter.
I can't really think of or remember hijacks, 80 seems like an awful lot, any
of you guys can name some?

I think one likely point is that it's a worldwide figure, in third world countries, and say the former Soviet republics hijackings are much more common than in Europe and North America. I think I remember some Chechen hijackers blowing up an airliner (maybe more than one?) and size of aircraft might also be a factor. There are plenty of non-commercial aircraft in the world.

Still it would be interesting to find out where those numbers came from, and who compiled them.

Yes, two flights from Moscow were hijacked and blown up within an hour or so of each other. This was shortly after the Beslan school siege.

Also remember the standoff on the runway somewhere in S. America where a retired guy and his son had grenades and a complaint about dad's pension or something.

I think there was another incident in Cuba within the past year or so...

Please define hijacking. I think it is loosely defined for this figure, but i'd like to know how they defined it.

This table only seems to show hijackings that resulted in some kind of aircraft damage. But that's a good place to start.

Hardly any of them include an aircraft that got damaged. Only about 4 or 5 may have resulted in aircraft damage.

Thanks
Mike
