Alaska Airlines To Hawaii Rumor?

Tue Dec 13, 2005 2:41 am

I heard a rumor that Alaska Airlines will be starting service to Hawaii. Anyone else heard this? Could it even be true?

Eventually it's going to happen.

http://www.alaskasworld.com/NEWS/2005/11/15_growth.asp

This week, the department notified the FAA that it plans to begin the certification process for Extended Twin-Engine Operations (ETOPS) for a portion of its 737-800 fleet.

“Without life vests or rafts, our aircraft must stay within 50 nautical miles of land,” says Scott Ridge, managing director of technical operations and support. “Along with equipping our –800s with life rafts, ETOPS will give us the ability to fly the most direct over water routes to Cancun, saving time and money. It will also allow us to apply for additional markets to Cancun under a new bilateral agreement between the U.S. and Mexico.

Although we have not currently decided upon any new markets, we move forward with the ETOPS process for our 737-800s. This will eliminate the time and expense of retrofitting existing aircraft in the future, putting us in position to take advantage of new opportunities, including Hawaii.”

Wouldn't be surprised to see SEA-HNL and PDX-HNL flights as well, that'll increase competion with HA and NW in those cities. ANC probably won't be a daily flight. HA flies to ANC on a limited basis.

What about HNL/YVR or HNL/YXX or HNL/YLW oe HNL/YYC in northern winter?

Actually thinking about it, all excpet HNL/YLW would be better served by large widebody in frequently, eg. once a week, a la Canada 3000.

I wish they'd do it soon! Alaska would compete somewhat well with NW and HA in this market out of PDX and SEA.

It might be a year or two, though, it sounds like Sad

I'd like to see the following:

SEA-HNL (x2)
SEA-OGG
SEA-KOA

PDX-HNL
YVR-HNL
ANC-HNL

Nothing has been announced just yet, but the ANC-HNL market is HUGE and vastly underserved. Any service to Hawaii will undoubtedly start with ANC-HNL, possibly followed by SEA-HNL service.

Depending on how strong demand becomes, ANC-OGG and SEA-OGG aren't out of the question either.

And I know you'll hate to hear this...but I doubt we'll see any service from PDX.  Sad

I'm going to have to agree with EA CO AS..As much as I would love to see Alaska start flying PDX-HNL, I think we are presently well served by Northwest and Hawaiian Air at this time....Maybe sometime in the future.....

Strange to have an airline called "Alaska Airlines" flying into Hawaii. Would be better if it call Aloha Airlines.

Oh never mind. we got that airline there anyway.

Fly Alaska to HNL from SEA is not any stranger than flying Alaska to Mexico.

I hope AS flies to HI soon. I would fly them any day over NW and HA.

I think Hawaiian has a much better product both in terms of service and a relatively new widebody fleet.
Keepin' it real.

The problem with ANC-HNL using 737-800s, even with winglets, is that it could probably be weight restricted most of the time. Aloha used to fly ANC-HNL for Hawaiian Vacations for a short time with their 737-700s before installing winglets and they were always weight restricted having to leave bags behind.

I think the reason ANC-HNL hasn't been daily in recent years is due to aircraft size. The HA 763 and NW 753 are a little too big to fill up on a daily basis for this route. I actually think that an AS 737 would be the perfect fit for a daily ANC-HNL flight, especially with the frequent flier base in Anchorage. The only issue might be weight restriction.

Also, if/when AS starts ANC-Hawaii, you can probably say goodbye to the NW flights between ANC-OGG/HNL, unless AS decides to fly on the 4 days per week that NW doesn't do the flight.

I wish UA would fly SEA - HNL as well. Didn't HA used to fly HNL - ANC?

I would hope AS would start showing movies in coach if they start flying to Hawaii. PTV's would be nice!  stirthepot

Hmm, well the digiplayers are pretty nice. I think I'd take those over PTV's.

Still do, as a scheduled charter for Hawaiian Vacations. Once a week in summer and twice a week in winter, and more over holiday periods.

I cant see that as a problem Westjet is starting service to Honolulu and Maui out of YVR this month using there 73NG's and Aloha airlines fly's Honolulu to YVR useing there 737-700's. So I can see Alaska Airlines flying to Hawaii useing there 737-800's out of SEA or KPX.

Yes, but I think AQ's flights are severely weight restricted IIRC. A 737-700 with winglets would still be pushing it to make it into Hawaii fully loaded with a full load of fuel.

FJ fly NAN-HNL-YVR with a 73G , the NAN-HNL sector is about 300nm longer than HNL-ANC - and the HNL-YVR is about 60nm less . Can't remember whether FJs a/c are winglet equipped , I think that they are .

edited to add : have looked at photo database - the -800s are wingletted , but not the -700s , I wonder why ?

West Coast to Hawaii, including YVR, is not a problem for the 737NGs with winglets. However, ANC-Hawaii is a problem due to the winds.

They actually use both the 737-700 and -800 on the route.
