FedEx Jumpseat Program, Return?

Tue Dec 13, 2005 9:18 am

I know at FX, we use to have a program in place for employees working around or with the a/c they could jumpseat on any FX flight anywhere in the world, given available space.

I believe it was August of this year when the program was suspended...they left the door open to bring it back, yet I've heard nothing about it.

Has anyone heard any news on the possibility or returning the program for FX employees?

Thanks!

I am pretty sure the dreranged employee that almost killed the cockpit crew pretty much ended that program.

that incident didn't affect the program, I jumpseated over 100k over the course of 3 years at Fed...... Some recent events (past year or so) did.

Does not look like they are ever coming back.

International FX employees haven't had access to this benefit since 9/11.

Several years back a non-rev'ng Fedx pilot attacked the flight crew on a DC-10 with the hammer. All three crew members were seriouly injured and it took 2 to hold him down while the third landed the plane alone. Somewhere on the net is the ATC recording of the event. Some chilling stuff...

I am pretty sure it didn't, that was a long time ago and it's gone through lots of different flavors since then.

After 9/11 it was suspended pending new systems at FedEx to better control who was on the planes -- had to tighten it up a lot, and it took a little while for them to get the requisite systems into place. They worked really hard to get everything in place as quickly as possible, because besides being a good perq, it was used for company business travel, so suspending it gave them a big cost hit.

Also either before or after, not sure which, when FedEx had their big reorg when they introduced the different colors, I know they were talking about restricting the jumpseat access to people directly involved in the airline operation, not in other parts of the company, but I don't know whether they followed through with that.

I wasn't aware that they suspended it again this August, what official reason was given? Foxecho, are you allowed to share any more?  Smile

Not many folks know the real reason and I don't know if it will come back or not since there's no real answer from the co. Part of the problem is that after 9/11 all pilots were finger printed and had FBI background checks done but that was never implimented for all other employees. Why would I want a jumpseater that didn't conform to the same security check as me? But no one knows the ultimate outcome. I agree it was a neat benefit and I rarely had a problem. Yes worldwide there are restrictions that prevent int'l employees from j/s but that is another issue.

Incorrect sir, I was sujbected to FBi and DHS backgroud checks. The FBI has two sets of my fingerprints on file, and I have a security clearance per our (FX) contract with the United States Postal Service and FAA necessities.

The JumpSeat Program was still in place until middle of 2005, no reason was given other than some jumpseaters made cabin crews uneasy or suspicious. It just really sucks to punish us all, for a few crazies that exist in the company.

I can guarantee you that a large number of jumpseat eligible people had no more than the equivalent of a "credit check' and it was discussed a number of times. I can also guarantee you that a few" uneasy or suspicious pilots" had nothing to do with the j/s policy being changed, you give us credit for having more clout than we do. The policy change came from much higher than flt. ops. and we don't know why either. I wouldn't be surprised if the student that was arrested at Univ. of Mem with the uniform and" how to" books didn't have at least some influence. Keep in mind there have been some uniforms stolen and ID, etc.s.

Yes it does, I agree but you must remember that it works both ways too. A few bad apples stain the whole barrel. That's human nature. I'm sure you know more bad apple stories about the pilots than you know good stories. It affects us too and I can tell you that every little nice thing we've lost over the last 20 odd years has been result of a few bad apples' actions.
In the end just keep your fingers crossed and hopefully there will be a change in the future. I can say that I've never had a problem with any jumpseater and have tried to never kick one off. Good Luck!! CC
