Ryanair-Are They Running Out Of Routes?

Thu Dec 15, 2005 9:12 am

Just an observation of the recent route announcments by Ryanair. Most seem to be 3 or 4 times weekly rather than daily!

Was'nt their original bussiness model built on a daily operation?

Routes also seem to be to even more unlikely places!

Prestwick - Reus & Marsaille 3 x weekly
Liverpool - Porto 3 x weekly & Seville 4 x weekly
Manchester - Shannon 3 x weekly
Stanstead - Brest,Lamezia,Balaton,Marsaille, 3 x weekly Parma 4 x weekly

Ryanair have plenty of room for expansion..and the EU gets better expect them to be very active there. These new routes might just be 'testing the water' seeing if the market exists before going to daily. London has never had a regular link to any Hungarian airport appart from Budapest..so Ryanair need to see if the market is there and who know's maybe we'll see daily in the summer.
Having said that I can think of a few places I'd love FR to fly from. Kosice in Slovakia being one (this is purely self reason cos i visit frequently).

A lot of them are just 3 or 4 weekly because as you say they are to more unlikely places, or they cannot be sure there maybe a big enough market for the route to be daily. For example, many people may not have even heard of Lamezia, Balaton or Parma, so if they start a daily operation, they may find that aircraft are near enough empty. I'm sure if these routes are a success, then they will be increased to a daily operation.

With the example of Shannon-Manchester, this seems to be following on from BA dropping the route. Now i'm not sure about the frequencies of BA's services from MAN-SNN, but if they cut the route then it can't have been doing to well for them, so it would be stupid for Ryanair to jump in with a daily flight that can hold 189 passengers, when BA couldn't make a daily (i assume it was daily) regional jet service work.

I'm sure Ryanair could find a few more airports in Europe to fly from/to, and i believe they plan on basing another 10 or so aircraft at Frankfurt Hahn in the next few years, so possible routes maybe from Frankfurt to Bournemouth, East Midlands, Liverpool, Valencia etc? Just a thought

If FR were to commence say MAN- TFS or MAN-LPA, 2 or 3 times a week, it may do well in the winter months, then possibly go daily in the summer. People winge and moan and say anything over 4 hours and you need hot meals and all that, but if the price was right, who cares! Take a sandwich! And if you cant go 4 hours without needing to eat you shouldn't be out of the house let alone flying! (excluding those who need to eat for medical reasons, in which case they would more than likely be carrying their own snack anyway)

There's plenty of new opportunities for FR, not least with the expansion of the EU.

Don't forget that there's a lot of crossing the Ts and dotting the Is to be done with existing airports served.

As for new places in existing EU countries, I can, for example, see at least 4 new places in Italy (all of which currently being served by other airlines, but Italy is very much FR territory, so if a deal is sufficiently good...), which would take the total places served therein to 20 (including Sicily and Sardinia). I can also see several new places in France, Spain and Germany. And then there's all the other countries...

Worry not: there's plenty of new places to be served and numerous new bases to create.

As for the less-than-daily frequencies, I think this could be because the routes are thin (not from major places to major places); the 738 might be too large; seasonal considerations; they might be to more untried places (like Balaton, Hungary) so it might be difficult to guage demand; aircraft availability; FR might be more cautious nowadays; and so on.

Ryanair could expand much more in Scandinavia and the Baltics... only Kaunas so far.

Theres also a bunch of lesser known islands in the mediterranean and north atlantic.. (Azores, Bermuda, Canaries), North Africa - Morrocco is only 100 miles or so from Jerez, but this means leaving the EU.

Theyve stated they wouldnt modify there 737 policy so flights to the US are off, though they could even make northern canada

Personally I would love to see ryanair goto other British territories...especially Gibraltar.
So far in 2008 45 flights and Gold already. JFK, IAD, LGA, SIN, HKG, NRT, AKL, PPT, LAX still to book ! Home Airport LCY

And RIX. 6 routes thus far from RIX. I see many more, especially to/from Germany (I see at least three new routes to Germany, subject to them or RIX becoming bases, as V flights aren't really operated).

Lots of opportunities and lots of time.

It seems they signed a letter of intent with the airport of Szczytno-Szymany (better known as the Polish "CIA Airport"), but they first need to repair their runway that is full of potholes, and their leaking terminal. Airport was closed earlier this year for safety reasons. Apparently a CIA 737 landed there in 2003, so I'm sure that's good enough for FR!

Wizzair also showed interest.

How to promote Szczytno-Szymany? "If you can pronounce it correctly, you'll get a free ticket!"

Edit: they even have a website! http://www.airport.szczytno.pl/

In case you wondered where they are (like I did):

Bezier BZR is likely to get a longer runway and am sure FR could be interested.

I also wonder if CFE or Rimini might return.

Well, I think there is plenty of room yet for new routes Spain-Europe. Iberia, remember, is not cheap after all. Regards.

I think that FR flew/flies DUB-FAO only once a week (or twice at most), which seems a bit starnge to me as I'd say that route would be able to sustain daily flights...

Bermuda: forget it, too far, ETOPS, etc. etc.
Azores: quite far, probably still ETOPS issues and a small market
Canaries: possible, perhaps not from the UK but from Girona?

Gibraltar would be a nice one. I don't think FR will ever explore non-EU territory, which excludes Morocco.

But I'm sure there'd be heaps of other routes they could still open. Hopefully some more to the new member states, Kosice would be nice indeed.

Oh fair enough. EEA then.

The EEA agreement (between the EU and Norway, Switzerland and Iceland) says that all EU transport Directives must be transposed also into national law. So from a transport-legislative point of view that would make those countries identical to EU countries, which the only thing that matters to Ryanair.

Iceland is an interesting case here (and I'm drifiting away from aviation now):

Iceland is part of the EEA Agreement and is therefore required to implement the Rail Acquis as appropriate. However, Iceland has no railways at present and there are no firm plans about construction of railways (a link between the main airport and the capital Reykjavik has been considered but so far it has been decided not to take it further). The link was therefore not included in the Proposal for a National Transport Policy for the period 2003-14. On this basis none of the EC Directives of the Railway Acquis applies at present to Iceland, although the Iceland Government agrees to the Directives in accordance with the EEA agreement (Ministry of Communications, 2003 and 2004)

Frankfurt to Bournemouth

This has already been dropped so i'm not sure what the loyality of customers would be like. Ryanair arn't the most popular airline at BOU after they closed down the buzz routes. This is only my guess btw. Who knows?

From Girona/Reus marketed as Barcelona is rather possible as it's only a 3-hours flight... but they have said there'll be no domestic flights in Spain until the start of operations in Ciudad Real.

Canary Islands will be undoubtly a destination from the new Don Quixote Airport in Ciudad Real (marketed as Madrid Sur) scheduled to open in late 2006

Since Morocco will install a free (open sky) arrangement with Europe,LowCost airlines from Europe will be allowed to fly into moroccan airports as of 2006.
It is thought that Ryanair,Easyjet ,Vueling and Italian companies will seek to open new routes there.
Specially from France the maket is huge !

that's easy: promoting it as the Masures airport. Wouldn't even be too far off.

well i'd say this pretty small city is better known from literature class or from the butcher around the corner than from geography class...

Ahem, it's not 'some lake', it's the largest lake in middle europe, larger than lake geneva and lake constance...

They have huge amounts of room. Hell... there are entire countries that they don't serve, for example Switzerland, 3 major airports and many more airfields that could support a ryanair type operation...

they've got room-a-plenty but they will likely never give into the very high(although not too high) Swiss wages and taxes.

Ryanair used to fly to MUC with the BAC1-11 in the good old loss-making days. Can't see them getting much of a good deal there though.

How about Kristianstad? I believe Maersk operated Kristianstad-Gatwick via Billund a few years ago. I'm sure they could make a Kristianstad-Stansted route work.

Ryanair used to fly to Kristianstad till 2000, then after they opened Malmoe the service was axed.
