Captain And F/O Seating.

Thu Dec 15, 2005 10:50 am

Hey guys,

Last week, one friend of mine flew from MIA to CCS and got to visit the cockpit before the flight. As usual, he asked many things and had a great time looking at the controls, but he saw something kind of weird and not common: The First Officer was seating in the Captains seat (they switched places).

He thought it was only for briefing and check lists, but when the aircraft landed at CCS, he went back up to the cockpit and they were still like that.

So, my question is: Is there any rule related to this situation...Captain seating in the F/O side and viceverse?

Just for curiosity!

Thanks in advance!

Cheers!!!

It was probably an F/O who was in the process of upgrading to captain. The guy on the right seat is a captain and qualified (through special training) to occupy either seat. He/she is there to observe and instruct the new captain during this period of IOE (Initial Operating Experience).

Captains sit on the left, and copliots sit on the right.
(But in helicopters the captain sits on the right!)
When a copilot has passed the captains course he will sit in the left hand seat, but still be under training for a while. At first the Training Captain will sit behind him, with a FO in the right seat, but later the Training Captain will sit in the right seat. Only Training Captains (TRI) or (TRE) can sit in the right hand seat. Once the FO has been passed by the Training Captain and got his four stripes, he is a captain and is not allowed back in the right hand seat.

Quoting TristarSteve (Reply 3):

Its the other way around. You will start flying with a training captain and after a certain amount of sectors and hours you will do your line check with the captain on the jumpseat. During supervision (training) you will NOT have a normal first officer next to you. A training captain does not have to be a TRI (type rating instructor) or TRE (type rating examiner). A training captain can be a normal line captain and when determined to do captains training by the company he has to pass a right hand seat check out (means engine failure and stuff in the simulator). It is usually custom to not wear the 4th stripe until you have passed the line check at the end of the upgrade.

I remember a simaler experience:

The newly promoted Captain had not had the chance to apply the extra bars to the uniform, and thus was a "first officer" .

On my return flight, she had the bars on her shirt shoulders, but not her jacket. I asked why and she said she could only afford one or the other for now....until she got her 1st full paycheck, then she would get a new uniform.
