Aeroflot Chooses 10 Japanese Assistants To Help FA

Thu Dec 15, 2005 12:36 pm

Starting last Monday, Aeroflot's flight attendants on the Moscow-Tokyo-Moscow will be assisted by an additional "crew" of Japanese personnel. This is the result of a contest held in Tokyo, in which Aeroflot selected 10 people. Nine of those are women, and one man. When making the selection, Aeroflot made it a requirement that all candidates speak fluent English, and also have had previous experience flying for a major airline.

Igor Chunihin, Aeroflot's flight attendant representative, said that the idea for this move came as a response to the popularity of Aeroflot's flights among Japanese citizens. Aeroflot says that adding Japanese crew to these flights will make them more comfortable for the Japanese public.

The Moscow-Tokyo-Moscow flight considered to be Aeroflot's premier international route. Aeroflot offers passengers many different magazines and information guides printed in Japanese for the comfort of the passengers. The new IFE in business class - "DigEplayers" were first available on the Tokyo flight. These flights are operated by the B767-300ER which now also include Aeroflot's new business class seat:

Congratulations to Aeroflot for knowing their customers!!

I think this is one of the smartest moves they can make - Japanese always have felt more comfortable travelling with a Japanese crew. Also, it is a sign of deep mutual respect - "you provide me a service that honors both myself and my culture, and I will see you as a partner worthy of my respect and attention. I can do business with you, and we will both propser".

A little mushy, yeah, but I like hearing stories like this...

Yeah, this is done on many other airlines flying to Asia, so it's good that Aeroflot is doing it. It's nice that they are hiring a good number and publicize it, I suppose they might have earned a reputation for a crew that doesn't speak Japanese very well?

They certainly have come a long way since the IL62 days at NRT...Aeroflot used to have VERY cheap rates to Europe via SVO from NRT...and certainly you got what you paid for...and remember JAL serves Moscow as well.

This is beautiful.
Does anyone know how many 767s have been retrofitted with the new seats? Does JFK have the new seats yet? (I always thought it was Aeroflot's premier route SU315/316)
What now?

So Aeroflot have had only Russian crew so far? I thought all European carriers flying to Asia have native Asian crew members as well.

Finnair have had Japanese/Chinese/Thai crew members for years, seems like 2-3 per flight usually.

I mentioned this in a similar post, but I think aeroflot is being with very aggresive with it's plans on expansion and new brand recognition. I think we are going to see many new things at aeroflot within the next 1-2 years. In 4-5 years, their fleet will be pracitically new and they're are going to take delivery of several new aircraft types such as the IL96-300, A320 series, RRJ and either the B787 or A350. Plus, once they finally get their online booking engine available to all, and their website writen in gramatically correct English, I think that SU will be in the same league as SK, OS, and FI. I can't wait to see where they decide to expand to, especially with their pending skyteam alliance entrance. Also, SU just launched new websites for certain countries, allbeit right now the languages offered are only English, Russian and Japanese, but if you go to the Japanese sight, I think aeroflot will be changing the others' coutries' websites to reflect their new image as well as their desire to service new markets and increase their reputation in the markets in which they already serve.

Aeroflot is a perfect example of an airline that has really turned itself around from what it used to be. Anyone know where it stands on Sky Team membership?

I completely agree! As far as I know, Aeroflot is planning on joining SkyTeam in 2006. Keep in mind, they still have some work to do with the airport. SVO 3 is in the process of being built. After it is completed, in 2007, supposedly all SkyTeam flights will operate out of there.
