International Charter Carriers Now Serving Varna

Fri Dec 16, 2005 4:52 am

A couple of years ago Bulgaria was largely the domain of Balkan Holidays here in the UK. British tour ops and charter airlines did not feature the resort prominently and if they did offer holidays to the Bulgarian resorts they utilised Balkan Holidays, Hemus or Via.

Now ThomsonFly, First Choice and Thomas Cook are all offering flights to Varna and Bourgas using their own airlines and aircraft. I wonder if this is the case in other European countries like Germany and Scandinavia.

Via and Balkan Holidays are now facing tough competition from UK charter carriers and I cant help thinking that Via will have to look at a replacement for the TU154 if it is to maintain a share of the inbound IT traffic to Varna and Bourgas.

OS group has 4 x weekly schedule Flights from Vienna to Varna. FB has 2 x weekly schedule Flights from Varna to Vienna and there are numerous Charters as well with OS/NG/Air VIA from different Austrian Cities.

Bulgaria starts to be a holiday hot spot for the future as Prices are cheap.

Via haven't been serving the Uk for years. Believe they had some licensing issues or similar, because at one point I'm sure they were banned from the UK. Via operated for Balkan Holidays, who had used Balkan, then went on to Hemus after Balkan and Via's own problems. BHAir was set up as a joint venture between Hemus Air and Balkan Holidays as an in-house carrier.

Thanks for the info.

Has Balkan Holidays airline moved towards A320 because of increased competition from Western carriers on the holiday routes? Do they still have a sizeable TU154 fleet and will they be operating the TU154 next summer?
