Poll - What Do You Think Of The UA/US Merger

Thu May 25, 2000 4:06 am

Okay, the poll is exactly what the topic reads - What do you think of the United-US Airways proposed merger.

I'll start. I think it will not be good for the citizens of the United States. You will have one airline basically dominating the country, and they will charge high fares, even though they say they won't (or that's what I think). How about everyone else's opinions?

I don't think it's a good deal and I don't think it will go through. UA employee = shareholders will not approve of the deal. It will not get regularatory approval either. The777Man

Is that fear coming from you, DeltAirlines? Are you afraid that DL's strangle-hold on the US south will be upset by a far better carrier that does not have to route every flight through ATL, or worse yet, CVG? If anything, this merger (acquisition) will open-up the east coast to better schedules and options to the midwest and west coast. UA's linear hub-system (IAD, ORD, DEN and SFO/LAX) will better serve US Airways fliers (and other southern folk/non-eastern corridor) than DL's ATL, DFW SLC hodge-podge. The big question is how soon will UA/US shut down CLT infavor of IAD or vice versa - two hubs so close to each other do not make sense (a la NW in MSP and DTW). Oh, by the way, UA will NOT KEEP THE A330's! TWA, you interested?

I actually want the deal to go through, as I travel between New York City and Upstate NY several times a year, and the only airline choice is USAirways, which doesn't fly most of these trips on weekends, when I need them, and they already charge outrageous fares. I stopped considering taking the airline a long time ago and just fly myself in my 172, or if the weather's bad I have to drive 4-5+ hours. If this deal is approved then I might consider trying the airlines again. Also, for non-regional flights I never fly either airline anyway, so it doesn't really affect me in my opinion in that department.

What I hear is UAL will have about 26% market share, thats not dominating the market, so it may get governmernt approval. The unions have board members so it's really only employees voting as stockholders, who can predict what they will say.

I don't like it. United has always catered to the business and high yield passenger, rarely caring about the everyday "joe blow" traveler. Just look at their "Economy Plus". Sure it's great for the full fare passenger, but squeezes the back of coach down to 31" of pitch... OUCH!!

VOTE NO!

I may benefit personally from the merger, but I don't like how large this company will become.

I wouldn't like it if it dismantled IAD, if it streingthened IAD then I would love it. I live 9-10 miles from IAD and am in the international flight path. I love seeing those UAL 777s and would love to see UAL's 330s.

United is star-alliance member, in star- alliance are tons of Airbus flying. United itself has many Airbus, and USAir is Airbus´s biggest customer.
That might become a problem for Boeing.

If this merger will happen (will be allowed) then most likely a dam will break.
I think it was last year that NW was not allowed to take over Continental. And now an even bigger airline should be allowed to take over an also not unimportant competitor?

I think it's a good thing. UA's east cost presence is lacking (particularly in NY) and US will add some valuable assets to these routes.

As for competition - higher prices WON'T result, because UA and US do not compete on a large number of routes, so this merger will NOT lead to higher prices, If, however, you saw AA and US merge, with significant overlap, you would see a larger reduction in competition, which could result in higher prices.

Let's remember that a combined UA/US still has many competitors, including DL/CO/AA/SW so they won't have the power to control fares any more than they currently do (well maybe a little, but not much).

No, I am not afraid that UA will take over Delta in the south, as right now in the Southeastern US (excluding MIA) Delta and Northwest are the biggest airlines. Cincinnati is also a fine airport to connect at as well, and I think it is better than Chicago because - Less traffic, easier connections to east coast and southeast from the western part of the country.

As the Horse in the old Ren and Stimpy cartoons would say,'No Sir, I don't like it.....". Because I thought USAirways was about to become great on it's own. But this may prove to be better, I don't know. They both may see the writing on the wall and beat an approaching wave of mergers by making the best deal now instead of settling for more undesirable scraps(AWA). But having seen USAirways grow from old Allegheny, I was excited for it's future. Now I don't know what to feel.

We are looking at a 26% share of the passengers that will fly totaly. This is 1/4 the passengers that means Northwest, Southwest,America West, Delta, Twa and
Alaska have to compete for the rest of the 75% leaving 12.5% per carrior (of course some will have more than others).

All I have to say is United will just become anoter Microsoft.

I think the UA/US proposed (and that's all it is at this point, PROPOSED) merger would harm the small to mid-size cities served by USAirways with big jets, markets such as KALB, KGSP, KCHA, KSYR, KROC, etc. I am fearful UA will either pull out of those markets totally or leave them to United Express and the RJs. I think fares will go even higher in these markets, except where Southwest is a player, such as KALB. I'm opposed to the proposed merger.

Opposed - in my view it is just another hungry company gobbling up a small company before it even has the chance to grow large. And I agree that UA may pull jet service out of smaller places like ROC which depend on US for jet service.

My opinion is that US airlines will soon ALL merge into 2 or 3 HUGE airlines, just like all of the nations financial institutions (Banks) are doing. All of the little startups will unfortunately starve to death. Of course, my opinion could be totally out in left field, but that's what makes America wonderful.

Last time I checked, we weren't the Soviet Union...so why have another Aeroflot. Am I exaggerating...maybe, but the 'new' United will have unattainable size and status. The 'new' United will have nearly 1000 aeroplanes! Carry far, FAR more passengers! Only through a new merger like AA and DL could any airline come close to acheiving the size of a UA/US merger.

I think the merger is a great idea. I love both airlines, but esp. United. United rocks, and this hopefully will boost their buisiness. I want to also be a UAL pilot when I grow up. Go UAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No I don't like it. If this merger does go through, then others will surely follow. Even though United claims it will keep a price lock on tickets for two years, the mergers that do come about because of this monostrosity may not keep their prices. All in all, in the long run (which is all that really matters anyway) prices will be higher, service will suffer, and it will become tougher for the little guy (JetBlue, Airtran) to enter the airline industry. I thought America was based on equality.....if you believe that I'll tell you a joke. If this isn't a monopoly I don't know what is. United is big enough already.

It depends on one thing I hope that if it does happen the US Air express service to my airports isnt cancled now if it gets chnaged over to United Express that would be awsome but I dont want to lose it becasue my airport is struggling as it is. So I hope I odnt lose that I dont fly on it but I just want to see them stay.

I think that the merger is a sign of things to come, as there will be more mergers and alliances, creating a smaller number of mega-mega carriers. This merger if it happens, fit into that category.

To all: I have difficulty imagining that UAL/US can pull this off...not only will there be regulatory hurdles from the post Microsoft Justice dept., but I think UAL's unions will be strongly opposed to the acquisition, and that is what this is, a straight cash/debt assumption acquisition. No separate entities here.
The real wildcard to all this will be AA's response. They may well make a competing bid, possibly serious, maybe just to make UAL up the ante. The more US costs, the more unpalatable the acquisition will be to UAL's unions.
As an aside to this topic, imagine the problems fleet planners would have integrating an AA/US fleet!!

This merger is a spectacular idea.

It creates the first comprehensive all-directions network (sorry, guys - no one right now has a comprehensive all-directions network).

It gives everyone in the Northeast a stronger, more consistent, more stable airline. No threats of collapse here...

It ends the saga of what is a great airline while it is still great. Yes, USAirways has made some smart decisions lately and is looking promising. It's been chronically mismanaged, however, and the same poor results of the past look to be around the corner again.

The market share will be about 25%. I'm not sure that includes the DC Air divestiture. I think that they'll divest more (perhaps some commuter routes or MetroJet) and try to get market share to be about 20%. That seems to be a comfortable level for regulators.

They are being very careful not to step on anyone's toes. Yes, there will be four-and-a-half hubs within very close reach (CLT/PHL/PIT/IAD/LGA-halfway), and some may close eventually, but if US was left on its own, CLT would have been in trouble anyways IMHO.

US-UAL is a great merger for the community. It's will be the first true all-points airline in the country, if not the world. This is a great merger!

PS - UA A330 could work... it would look great!

All this merger talk has conjured up my fond memories of Piedmont Airlines. These memories in turn drove me out to buy a FULL can of Coke and a package of smoked almonds, the salt from which is now beginning to clog up my mouse. AAArrrgh. The merger hasnt even hit justice yet and already its causing MAJOR problems.

Joking aside I have studied this intensely for the past two days. After much wailing and grinding of teeth I have come to the conclusion (or delusion) that overall, IF properly executed the positives outweigh the negatives. There are sufficient tangible benefits to the airlines, the employees and the consumer to make this worth pursuing. In the affected areas (excluding DC) fares are already high due to hub domination by these two carriers. The merger will not increase their domination to any substantial degree (is a 78% share really any worse than a 76% share). The merged company will not provide any fare relief but will greatky expand the number of travel options and destinations thus providing a better overall value for the consumer than they are now receiving.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has extensive and relatively balanced coverage on all angles of the merger in todays edition. It includes some utterly ridiculous statements from Mark Cooper of the Consumer Federation of America on page A20. Its worth the lookup just to read his statement about forcing divestiture of slots in Pittsburgh         Go to http://www.postgazette.com.
