CR Airways HK To Order 787 & 737 Dec 20

Fri Dec 16, 2005 5:17 pm

Just coming through via Bloomberg

By Vicki Kwong
Dec. 16 (Bloomberg) -- CR Airways Ltd., a Hong Kong-based private airline, said it's poised to place an order for Boeing Co.'s aircraft, expanding its fleet to fly to China as the nation's demand for air travel rises.

CR Airways said it will sign an agreement on Dec. 20 for Boeing's 787 and 737 800 aircraft, according to an e-mail sent to Bloomberg, without saying if the order is a purchase or a lease.

The airline's spokeswoman Angela Li declined to say how many planes CR Airways may order. Boeing's Hong Kong-based spokesman Mark Hooper didn't respond to two calls to his cellular phone.

Have I got this right?

These guys are going from 2 CRJ-200s, 1 CRJ-700 & 1 604 Challenger to 738s and 787s?  Wow!

Guess it helps if you have Hainan Air looking to invest 60% into the company.

CR, Viva Macau, Air Bangkok, Yemania and the list goes on as a new name is added each week. Now I can understand statement's from earlier in the year why Boeing was talking about 600 to 800 proposal's with carriers.

CR do not have a CL604 but they do have a 2nd CRJ700 on the way.

The important thing you may not know is Hainan are buying into them or taking them over, this is why they are getting the 738's. I understand they will be leasing some from Hainan soon.

Hainan wanted to start a Hong Kong airline but could not get a licence to do so, buying into CR Airways solved their problem. Before this news CR Airways seemed to be doing very badly with three aircraft spending most of the time on the ground!

CR 787's...... well that will be something!

Thank you for the correction N754PR I was unaware of the second CRJ700, did they ever have a CL604?

The info on Hainan I noted and that is a good way to start up a HK based carrier. Apparently HNA Group, owner of Hainan wish to invest in CR Air by buying 60% according to the report I have read. Perhaps that will help their airplanes spend more time in the air!!

HNA Group, a shareholder of Hainan Airlines Co, wants to buy 60 percent of CR Airways, the South China Morning Post said on November 24, without saying where it obtained the information. Sun Jinwei, a spokesman for HNA Group, did not pick up calls to his office yesterday

Do CR plan to use the 787's on regional routes within Asia, or use them on routes to places such as the US, Europe, Middle East and Oceana?

The South China Morning Post, citing sources close to the deal, said CR Airways would sign a memorandum of understanding with Boeing to buy 30 B737-800s and 10 B787s on Tuesday, and a formal purchase agreement was scheduled to be signed next month.

Sorry but maybe someone can elighten me a bit on its history.

When I was in the Philippines booking a flight to Hong Kong, the travel agent referred to them as China Rich Airways. May be something to do with the fact that the CR is what you ask for when you need to relieve yourself in the Philippines, (comfort room).
I ended up taking Tiger Airways to Macau, then taking the ferry to Hong Kong, as it fit my schedule better.
CR Airways has 3 flights a week to CRK (the old Clark AB near Manila) from HKG.

This one might end up being a no-go! The Hainan Airline deal might very well mean that CR looses all its route rights - as reported this morning in South China Morning Post. The article seems rather negative (What a shame as Dragon Air and CX could need som competition).

Aaaah, that's a few more than I expected. I wonder whether these will be all for firm order's or a mixture of firm and options. Taking on Cathay and Dragonair will be a hard task, not to mention all the Mainland carriers which service HK as well.

Then they need to think about Viva Macau as well, at least they appear to be getting set up so as not to compete with Air Macau but rather take over rights which the former is not using.

It will be interesting to see what tomorrow's announcement brings.

Are you talking about the recently announced 737 deal when President Bush visited China? Wasn't that "only" for 70; with 80 "pending"?

Most likely this is what is referred to. However, the contract signed was for 70 of which 45 are believed to be previously announced orders for the China Southern group which are still pending. That consists of 12 73G and 18 738 for CZ and 15 738s for Xiamen Airlines. In which case the 70 would only consist of 25 new orders. After that was signed though Boeing confirmed they are still in talks for a further 80 737s. So at this stage, until we see the final contract for the China Aviation Supplies Group appear it is not quite clear just how many are new orders or whether the order may be increased.

What is notable though is that no 787s were mentioned. Hainan have ordered their 8 so the 787s should be new orders (or leases) at the minimum. If what I said about the 70 737s was right, then 25 new frames won't cover the 30 that CR Air will require, assuming the report is accurate. So either way, the majority of this order should be for new frames, either direct or via lease.

HNA is the ultimate holding Company of Hainan, if they take 60% of a HK based company they should be free from the Political constraints that impede orders by mainland carriers due to the benefits of the HK company still being in the S.A.R.

Only one day to go though so maybe I've posted too much noise on a slow day  Smile

From today's FI article:

China’s fourth largest carrier Hainan Airlines is about to take over fledgling Hong Kong carrier CR Airways and use its traffic rights to launch new services with newly acquired Boeing 737-800s and later Boeing 787s.

....

But some of the CR Airways 737-800s will be aircraft Hainan Airlines ordered earlier and which are switching to CR Airways, according to the CR Airways official, who wishes to remain anonymous.

The Hong Kong carrier is taking over some Hainan 737-800s so it can get aircraft sooner and launch new services to mainland China and other countries in Asia quickly. “We will be competing directly against Cathay Pacific Airways and Dragonair,” says the official.

Could be - however, the problems with loosing their rights to fly their planned routes might still mean that the order will be later.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong's CR Airways said today that it has agreed to buy a number of Boeing 737-800 and 787 passenger jets.

The planes would be used to expand services to mainland China, the newspaper said.

How are all these airlines getting slots for 2008?

LOT, QF, and now this? - There were others.
If they are opening another line, does that mean that airlines who ordered before but got slots in 2009/2010 will get a/c earlier?

Thank you DIA It's a shame the Release does not contain a picture or two. Would be good to see what livery these irds will wear. Given HNA Groups participation and comments by Boeing's HK representative, I feel that the direct order amount maye less than the headline amount mentioned.
