BMI Regional To Start ABZ-AMS (March 06)

Tue Dec 20, 2005 2:44 am

I have been searching for this elsewhere but i haven't managed to find anything.

I was informed today that BMI Regional are to start flights from Aberdeen to Amsterdam as of March '06. 3 times daily on their Embraer's.

Should be in the local press any day.

Anyone else heard about this?

Well if it is true I think it is stupid. AMS is not an *A Hub, and KLM have just increased AMS-ABZ flights to add an extra daily flight. On top of that, KLM have the benefit of plenty of connecting traffic which BD don't at AMS.

If true, I cannot see it lasting long.

Would you ever expect bmi to come up with a sensible route decision?  Wink

Actually folks, as someone who worked with BD for many years I have a tendancy to disagree. The reason I do so, is because BD has many corporate agreements with the likes of BP and Shell who also through shareholdings etc are at the forefront of blue chip businesses in the Netherlands. If an agreement has been reached for the transport of "lesser" execs (I'm sure the top brass have their own transport available at their beck and call) to the platforms & refineries off the east of Scotland in the North Sea it could be very lucrative indeed. From ABZ it's a quick chopper ride out.

What inspired the introduction, by KLM cityhopper, of a service EIN-LHR? It was a corporate agreement between the airline and Philips, and any additional revenue generated above and beyond the capacity that was required by Philips, was saleable as a published fare. I suppose you could almost consider it a subsidised charter service.

If such an agreement has taken place between a major oil company and BD, then it could be very profitable indeed for the airline.

But then again, I could be wrong, but for BD's sake I hope I'm not. I was proud to be there, but a little sad now when I see how things have ended up for BD. Good luck.

I don't think there was anything inherently 'non-sensible' about bmi's proposed EDI-MUC route in itself ... though it was a bit daft to put the flights on sale before suitable slots were confirmed!

Like LTN-BRU, where BD can offer no connections anywhere!

I would be amazed to see how BD could compete, even if they did have 50 corporate 'bums on seats' on each flight each day. Surely the cost of the RJ is far higher than the 737's used by KL on the same route?

This was my first thought too. Remember that for exactly the same reason BMI Regional is operating a 2x daily (weekdays) flight ABZ-GRQ too, exactly with a similar construction as BDKLEZ described: Gasunie and other oil- ans gas companies lease a certain number of seats on every flight and what is left is for public sale.

When did it go double daily? AFAIK the flight is operated 5 times a week (monday thru friday), once daily

Agree fully - EDI MUC was exactly what BD should have launced.

Just like LGW CDG, which was also planned.

And you don't think that they perchance have a contract with KL for the route, hence the capacity we already see on AMS ABZ?

I thought the A330s were being redeployed on their new 4 x weekly MME-FRA-Ulan Bator route?  Wink Whilst a leased B737-200 take over the Inida routes operating LHR-FRA-IST-ISB-BOM  Wink

Having also worked for KL as well as BD, I know that they do not, at least not in the context that I refer to above. The capacity on the route is because ABZ was closed down as a KLM cityhopper "base" a number of years ago, when it was previously operating the F100 between AMS & ABZ. As it is now operated by KLM mainline, who do not have crew based in ABZ, and operate the route out of AMS with B737 equipment, it's natural that such capacity should be available on the route as KLM do not operate equipment any smaller than 737's.

So ABZ-AMS, EDI-MUC, LTN-BRU what are BD's other non-hub routes?? And major European carriers in particular.

Indeed, but it's definitely been dropped. There are positive and negative viewpoints posted in various threads about this. My personal opinion is that it could've worked, but alas it's a non-starter.

I think BMI will do ok on this route, if they manage to keep the price realistic and not just go for the business punters.

We get a lot of stag do's and hen parties going to AMS for long weekends, so a bit of competition for KL will be good.

There is room for BMI on this route if they don't get greedy.

Well it depends if you call ABZ a hub. My particular favourite is ABZ - NWI. Along with T3 and BE on the very same route, that makes eight flights every week day in each direction... a pretty useful selection if you work in the north sea oil or gas industries  Smile

You cant keep the price realistic on an ER3... Pricing has to be high to cover the stupid CASM an ER3 has. The ER3 isnt suitable for non hub routes, and you cant compete with a 737 with one.
