It looks like a Chalk's Airways flight if the caption on the newscast is correct.

When was the last, if any, accident for Chalk's? It's the first that I can ever remember.

Watching CNN as I write this and they are showing a section of a wing on a jetty. The wing has soot on it which supports the witnesses statements of the wing being on fire before impact.

RIP to those who did not survive.  Sad

9 times out of 10 these reports are not accurite, but seeing the wing up agenst the jettie it might just be right....... it was badly burned. Sadly I'm sure there was no FDR/CVR.....

CNN's calling it an Albatross, but I was under the impression that Chalk's operates only the G73T Turbo Mallard.

Chalk's is a part 135 carrier. Most likely there is a CVR and quite possibly an FDR as well. Sounds like an engine fire leading to a spar seperation.

<< Plane crashes off Miami Beach

Monday, December 19, 2005 Posted: 2054 GMT (0454 HKT)

Divers take part in the rescue effort near Miami Beach.

MIAMI BEACH, Florida (AP) -- A seaplane carrying at least 16 people crashed Monday off Miami Beach within sight of the city's high-rises, and at least six people were killed, authorities said.

Scuba divers and rescuers in speedboats struggled to reach the victims.

The propeller-driven Chalk's Ocean Airways plane went down around 2:30 p.m.

"We're still trying to get people out of the water," said Javier Otero, Miami Beach Fire Department support services chief.

Law enforcement officers searched for victims via boats and helicopters and were joined by others in private boats, on Jet Skis and on surfboards.

Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Chris O'Neil said at least six bodies were recovered.

A witness, Frank Amadeo, told WSVN-TV that he saw a huge explosion in the sky and the plane fall behind a condominium tower on Biscayne Bay in Miami Beach.

The Coast Guard said the cause of the crash was not immediately known, and it could not confirm whether there had been an explosion. The National Transportation Safety Board said it will investigate.

Otero said the plane was one that regularly flies to and from the Bahamas, but he did not immediately know whether the aircraft was incoming or outgoing.

TV helicopter footage showed debris in Government Cut, the channel that ships take past South Beach into the Port of Miami.

Chalk's Ocean Airways was founded in 1919. Its floating planes take off on the water. Chalk's aircraft have been featured in TV shows such as "Miami Vice."

Founded by Arthur "Pappy" Chalk, the airline thrived during Prohibition, taking bootleggers, their customers and customs agents to Bimini.

One of its planes was hijacked to Cuba in 1974 and the company has since had a policy of not carrying enough fuel to get to Havana.

Two years later, the airline was sold to Resorts International, which owned properties on Paradise Island. Donald Trump bought it in 1988 and sold it a few months later to Merv Griffin. The owner as of 1995 was Seth Atwood of United Capital Corporation of Illinois/Atwood Enterprises.

According to FlightSafe Consultants' Airline Safety Web site, Chalk's has had no known fatal accidents. Similarly, the NTSB database shows no fatal accidents for Chalk's since 1982, when the database started.

The airline had no comment after the crash.

I just flew Chalks from FLL to Paradise Island and back on November 19/26. I flew on N142PA and N2969. The experience was very memorable. I am saddened to hear of this news on many counts. God Bless the passengers and families of those involved with this tragedy.

The planes at full capacity seated 16 passengers + 2 crew.

CBS4 is showing a picture taken on the beach by a witness.
It shows a lot of smoke in the air and is apparently of the plane moments after it plunged into the water.

Officially: 12 confirmed fatalities, 6 missing.
Chalks's is not commenting to the media at this time.
None shall pass!!!!

Is there somewhere that I can see a "runway" that these planes fly? Do they land in any open water they see, or is it more organized than that? Where does it land at FLL, off the beach?

The plane was definitely a G-73T as Chalk's stopped operating the Albatross some time ago. All of the Mallard's owned by Chalk's underwent the conversion to the PT-6 in the early eighties. To be honest I am surprised that they are still operating from the harbour as I thought that was halted after the 9/11 attacks.

This is very sad. As far as I can recall, there was only one other fatality on Chalk's in it's history and that was a pilot killed due to excess water in the hull of the aircraft during a reposition near Key West (I could be wrong on this, but I believe it is correct).

I have flown on Chalk's many times and have many memories. My thoughts are with the families and of the crew and passengers.
