Smuggler's Transit At SIN

Tue Dec 20, 2005 2:12 pm

I was reading the court account of the Australian man who was recently executed in Singapre. In the document, he stated that he was transiting through Changi where he was caught when he set off a metal detector. He was subsequently patted down and the heroine was found.
If he was merely transiting through Changi, why did he have to go through metal detector again? COuldn't he have just stayed in the gate area and catch his conecting Qantas flight without being searched again?

Its been about 2 years since I've been in transit through Changi but if I recall the security check is done as you enter the each individual gate's seating area. Pretty much each gate has metal detectors and X-ray machines and once you enter you have to stay in a cordoned off seating area until you board (if you leave you have to go through the security check again). So even if you are in transit you have to go through security again when you go to your departure gate.

Most likely this is where this individual was caught.

I believe that arriving passengers from some countries they rescreen you when you arrive in SIN. Each gate area has its own separate security screening and metal detectors to acomplish this task. I'm not sure where he was coming from but when I came from India we were not screened upon arrival. I'm guessing his arrival was met with the screening. When leaving the next day for EWR I went through passport control and wandered for a few hours before finally going to the gate and then getting screened there.

Just my opinion here, and it doesn't support or protest the death penalty imposed, but he was downright retarded for bringing drugs through Changi.

Yeah, what he said. I knew I was forgetting something. Most likely that was where he got caught as was said.

It's still as Vxg said - arrivals into the transit area of T1 and T2 at Changi aren't screened. That happens when you enter each gate's departure lounge; ID check, and carry-on and body screen, then your boarding pass is processed.

Not like Dubai for instance where there is just one screening point upon arrival before you can enter the transit area. With ID checking occuring at the departure gates before your boarding pass is processed - then at about 20-30 minutes before departure everyone just wanders onto the plane, no announcements, no boarding by rows.

Thanks for the replies. I believe he was coming from Phenom Penh on Silk Air and changing to Qantas bound for Melbourne.
Strictly speaking, he never really entered Singapore. He would've been better off transiting through Bangkok or Honk Kong.

The airport is on Singapore soil so there is your jurisdiction. It's not like he was at the UN which is considered international land or a embassy or consulate which is considered foreign soil.

I don't believe Thailand would look too kindly upon drug trafficing. Haven't you seen Brokedown Palace or Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason?  biggrin

Agreed. It states in big letters on the SIN landing card "Singapore applies the death penalty to drug traffickers", so he knew the risk he was taking.
