AirTran Pulling IAD-BOS Before It Starts?

Wed Dec 21, 2005 8:13 am

Dulles-Boston, planned to begin early next year, no longer appears to be for sale on the AirTran website. That would appear to mean that AirTran is backing off in the face of new competition. After AirTran announced IAD-BOS, JetBlue revealed they were starting IAD-BOS weeks sooner and with more flights. Then United said they were upping IAD-BOS to hourly. And finally, Independence is still not dead.

Assuming this isn't just a glitch, it looks like AirTran doesn't think this is the place to jump in anymore. Speculation has had AirTran moving in on Dulles when Indy dies. However if they don't get a foothold in a key market like IAD-BOS, one wonders just how much headway they can make at Dulles.

Interesting indeed. However, the fact of the matter is that B6 is starting 6 flights on the route, UA is adding 5, and FlyI won't be dead (until March, at least). I think FL was really banking on FlyI's demise and they had no clue that B6 would react the way that they did. But hey, that's the nature of the game. Good for FL in recognizing a money-loser and pulling out.

When does FL get their next 737 delivery?
Indy = Indianapolis and not Independence Air

I would say UA is the big winner in this round. FL probably wasn't planning for the response from both UA and B6. Add DH still being in the market, and I think FL made the right move. UA's IAD-BOS flights run at a high load factor, but most of the traffic is low revenue connecting traffic. However, UA does get a great deal of Int'l feed from BOS.

For the most part, IAD is extremely over-capacitized right now. When DH closes up shop it will help some, but IMO IAD is not the best DC metro airport (I'd put it behind both BWI and DCA) revenue-wise to be adding service to right now.

From what I've read they are making this choice on the increace in capacity being added by other airlines. They said that going into a market where 2 airlines are hurting and another that is healthy would turn in to a big fare war where everyone would end up losing. Adding that they would much rather allocate that money to other markets that have more potential. (MDW,IND. and so on.) To me it sounds like they are trying to make a decsion from a business stand point instead of acting like airlines have been acting for along time by fighting like cats and dogs. (Thats what they said too)

Nothing concrete, but there is chatter on the Marketwatch board about taking a couple more MDW gates. Perhaps that's where FL is opting to focus.

Quickmover - is it true FL is moving to the A Concourse? I would think they would be well off at the end of the B Concourse as opposed to moving....Or is WN trying to take the whole B Concourse?

flyinryan99,

Not sure about that.
From what I've read, ATA was giving up all but one gate. WN takes 4, the city takes back 3, ATA keeps 1. The city keeps one of their gates open for other airlines, but ATA could use it part time if needed. I'm just guessing, but I'd bet FL takes 2 of what are now city gates.

Also read today that FL already has a 3rd daily to MCO and a 2nd SRQ from MDW scheduled for May.

You must be kidding me. IAD is the best airport to fly from DC area.
