Pic Of The NW DC9's Gear That Lost A Wheel At MEM

Wed Dec 21, 2005 12:06 pm

Actual pic of the the NW DC9's landing gear that lost the wheel landing at MEM on the 12/14. Not a very good shot, but you can see that it was a clean separation from the gear, which means the the wasn't secured to the mainmount, which means the lugnuts weren't torqued, or shear-wired.

Holy crap!

So while landing, it literally just rolled off?

Damn!

That's exactly what it did. Passengers saw the wheel bouncing alongside the aircraft as it rolled out.

I wish I could have seen the reactions from the passengers that saw the wheel bouncing along outside their window. If I had been on that plane, I probably would have started laughing. Just the absurd nature of it would have gotten a good laugh out of me.
It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems with just potatoes.

Anybody have a clue as to if the landing gear is all right or needs to be replaced from strees, 1 tire on landing where there should have been 2.

Any Idea when that Main Wheel in question was replaced.
Suspected In Adequate torque.
Was it an Reworked undersized Axle.
Any Official report.
