Anybody Know Details Of The Defective 777 Engines?

Wed Dec 21, 2005 6:28 pm

Heard that ANA and JAL need to fix the defective PW4000 engines for their B777 fleet. As reported it was a manufactoring fault that the leaking liquid will corrupt the constructure of teh wing. PW will cover part of the cost and the job has to be done on 27 ANA B777s and 21 of JAL.

It is a serious problem from my point of view. Anybody has insights? In China only Air China and China Southern Airlines operate B777, Air China has a 10 B772 fleet while China Southern Airlines operates a 11 B772/B772ER fleet. The good news for Southern is they bought GE engines. But for Air China, for sure PW is the only configuration. So I am worrying about the safety. Is the problem only impacting some specific a/cs? Or ALL the T7s with PW engines?

The impacted engine is PW4077 as I heard. Don't understand why there is no issue with UA, as I know UA is also using PW engines.

And I don't understand why nobody is interested in this topic. Is it a fake news? Smile

It is real problem. It was a manufacturing problem that ended up leaving residue on the fan blades which resulted in corrosion. There were at least two in flight shut downs as a result.

Quoting N79969 (Reply 2):

will this impact their ETOPs services or do JAL and ANA not use their 772 and 773s for ETOPs.?
