Has Westjet Retired The 737-200's?

Tue Dec 20, 2005 12:15 pm

I am curious to know if Westjet has officially retired the -200's yet. I have not seen any pictures of a westjet -200 since October, according to Transport Canada, Westjet still has 7 -200's registered to them. I saw 3 parked at the hangar in Calgary 2 weeks ago when I flew through Calgary.
So if anyone can let me know, I would appreciate it.

Regards

I was at YEG a couple weeks ago and saw a few. Here's one:

If you want to find out exactly what Westjet has planned for the 737-200s in it's fleet regarding how long those jets will be around with the airline, the best forum to ask in is the Civil Aviation Forum. The guys in there know the airline industry inside & out! You might even get actual dates & schedules about the remaining service of Westjet's 737-2's from those guys .... I wouldn't be surprised!  silly

I'm not trying to suggest the members of this forum couldn't answer your questions of course (90% of my posts on A.net have been in this forum over the years, although I've been doing mostly reading than asking questions lately).

It's just a suggestion for you to help you get some good info. Big grin

PS, I haven't flown with Westjet "YET!", but my wife Phyllis (aka Vaporlock in the forums) did last May and really enjoyed their service. Here's a shot she took of the 737-7's cockpit overhead panel ... that she flew to YVR on.

The best info I could find from Westjet is that the last of the 737-200's will be gone by "early 2006".

Nope, I believe there are still 3-4 in service at present...

I still see & hear them flying over my NW Calgary home every day.  Wink
Going to miss those aircraft once they're gone.

I was dealing with WestJet just tonight and they told me that they are currently flying one 737-200. It will be retired in January after they get a few more 73W. So there is your answer they have One.
I was told they will be having an official retirement party for the bird in Hawaii! That would be fun!!

Hope I helped!!!
Thanks

I saw one landing in Calgary(YYC) last night so there is definitely at least one still going strong. It was my understanding that they will all be retired very soon though.

There are at least 2 still flying in revenue service. Right now a 732 is flying a Calgary-Edmonton service, and the other is fly an extra segment 4000-series flight number on Calgary-Winnipeg.

Thanks everyone for helping me out, I guess I made the mistake putting this question in the tech/ops forum first, but glad to hear the answer, so I will have to head to calgary or edmonton to see it then. guess I know what I will be doing over new years now.

A very loud Westjet -200 departed CYXX this morning, throwing a sound over the Fraser Valley that many of us love, but some will be happy to have gone...

They tend toward the shorter runs anymore. I've only flown them between YYC-YEG with WJ.

I realize the press release is from July, but it sums it all up from the official source:
http://cnrp.ccnmatthews.com/client/w...For=548187&year=2005&releaseSeq=34

The 732's, the 732 simulator and spares will "officially" be gone in March 2006. But it sounds like most are parked/stored already.

Most 200 series aircraft are now just being used as backup aircraft. I think I heard somewhere that they always have at least 1 backup 200 ready and waiting at YYC. That would explain the 200 that is always parked by the terminal but rarely moves.

For what it's worth they are still operating the 200 to YMM and Abbortsford (ICAO code?) and YYC. I know they also still use the 200 on some runs between YEG and YLW.. WHY DOES YEG GET THE 200's.. I hate the 200's and can't wait for them to go away Big grin

BTW, i'm sitting in a YVR hotel room and flew a 600 in :p Much nicer then the 200 Big grin

No doubt it's time has passed, but I don't think there is a jet built that has proven itself more versatile as it has also operated in the combi and cargo variations.I've seen some 200's with skis attached to the landing gear for operating on temporary winter runways in the Arctic and others with kits for gravel runway operations.

As much as I understand WestJet's desire (and need) to retire these aircraft, I am certainly going to miss them... I have flown the WS 732s far more often than any other aircraft out there... no IFE... no legroom (I'm 6'1), but I never get tired of the noise & the thrust reversers on landing...  Smile
