Swissair Airbus A340

Fri May 26, 2000 12:29 am

Does anyone know if Swissair has ordered the A340? If so, this aircraft
will be a replacement for the MD-11's in its fleet?

Yes, SR has ordered Airbus 340. They will get 11 A340-600. First delivery in 2002. Until 2006 all MD-11 will be replaced by Airbus widebodys!

Swissair has ordered the A 340-600. It will get the first units in 2002 (let's hope so). The first order was 9 but I think they allready ordered more. I don't know how many options they have. They have and want to replace the 19 MD 11. Perhaps they change some options into the A 340-500. Swissair is one of the first customers of the -600.

I think its an excellent choice that they chose the A340. Do you think they would have replaced them with 777's in stead of thew A340's if they didnt make that decision.
Im glad they picked the A340

I don't know it they would have choosen the 777. But Swissair's decision was logical. At the moment they have pilots who fly the A 320 family (319/320/321) and the A 330-200. In the future they want to have pilots (it is not yet a final decision) who either can fly the 320 and 330 or the 330 and 340.

Airways magazine July 99 issue featured Swissair; under J. Katz they decided to switch to an all-Airbus fleet for economic and common crew management reasons... (not political reasons for all those conspiracy theorists out there). Anyway, with that in mind, it's pretty clear the 777 was never in the running.

I hope the new A340-500/600 with RR Trents closes the gap between it and the new GE90 777X. The earlier A340-200/300 was underpowered with those CFM56s, should have had the GE CF6 or P&W 2000 used on the 757 and Russian IL-96M. I know in the development of the A340, it was to have had a Superfan version of the IAE V2500. Because of technical risks the Superfan project was cancelled and Airbus had no choice but to use the CFM56.

About Swissair and Boeing: keep in mind, that Swissair never was a big Boeing customer. Apart from the 2 B742 and 5 743 I don't recall a Boeing aircraft in Swissair's fleet.

As for the numbers: officially Swissair has 9 A346 on order. This is according to Swissair website. An american leasing company (ILFC or GECAS?) has announced some wees ago, that the will lease 3 A346 to Swissair. So far I don't have any confirmation, if those are new A346, or 3 out of the original order for 9 A346.

So far, now swap to A345 was published or rumoured. I don't know any currently operated or planned city pairs out of ZRH, which would need an A345 instead of the A346.

The MD-11 are already sold to FedEx, as already stated here.

Hope it helps

From the respective websites:

Swissair originally placed an order for 9 A340-600s, with 11 options. That order was subsequently sold to Flightlease, the leasing arm of the Qualifier Group. Of course, the aircraft will still go to SR, they just won't be own (directly) by them.

Recently, Swissair entered into terms to lease an additional 2 A346s from ILFC.

Where did you read, that those 2 A346 from ILFC were additional? I missed this piece of information so far.

Just to add some info:

it was not only crew commonality and economics making Swissair choose the A346, but also performance. ZRH can become critical for heavy airplanes on a hot summer day, as you have to outclimb some hills rather close to the airport (hills, but still too hard for any flying object!). So on a critical engine failure, the 777 could NOT make a take-off on RWY16 (mainly used) without being seriously range limited. This emans, no nonstop SIN flights. The other thing is, when you have a contaminated Runway. Also there, the Airbus is much more performing than the 777.

To Richie: Which hills do you mean? The only hills which I recall are those between Kloten and Zurich-Oerlikon, and they are pretty far away, aren't they?

I have the same question as Gerardo has. Runway 16 is 3700 m long and there are no hills after it. I think any modern aircraft can take of there with full load.
