JetBlue Finally Gets An Interactive Route Map!

Thu Dec 22, 2005 2:52 pm

JetBlue finally gets an interactive route map! It's been a long time coming.

Like WN's, it has the option for connecting service or non-stop only. A non-flash version is still available. Personally, I think it looks great!

Finally!!

A much needed improvement....But it still needs a lot of work. Several routes overlap and it is difficult to tell.

If you use the non-stop only option, it makes it clearer.

I am sure that new flt in Jan FLL to OAK will be weight restricted. First flight ns to the Bay area. Bout time. Only other option in So Fla is MIA to SFO AA.

Correct me if im wrong but with this interactive route map I had no Idea they considered Dulles or Oakland as a hub or as a station.

Well any airport an airline flies into is also called a station. As for IAD and OAK, they have long been considered "focus cities" or "key cities".

Did you notice that they fly to SMF from IAD but only back to JFK ???
They already pulled the route out of the map when you press SMF but not when you press IAD !

Looks great...I love interactive route maps. DEN and SLC seem a little too far south though, lol.

Finally! It certainly shows that JetBlue listens to their customers. After the repetitive threads we had here about how JetBlue needed an IRM, and the many e-mails we sent, they got the message!

In any case, it looks great. Some little kinks to work out but other than that it's still very good.

I agree - they show DEN as being further South than RIC and SJC, when in fact it is further North than both of those.
Map must have been made by the same guy who put the IND Colts in the AFC South, but the Bengals and Ravens in the AFC North, when IND is farther North than CVG or BWI.

yes! Well, at least its an improvement! I'd rather at least be able to see that B6 flies SMF-JFK than have all those lines!

These sorts of maps are nice, and I applaud JetBlue for getting one. But nearly ALL the cities are more than 100 miles out of whack, and many are not even in the right state. San Diego is Yuma AZ, Denver is Tucumcari NM, Buffalo is Euclid OH, Burabank is Primm NV, and Salt Lake is Cortzez CO, just for example.

Maybe it's flyover country to people in New York City, but this map is rather pathetic.

Maybe they got a computer person to do it and not a GIS'er?  Smile Seriously, I cant imagine this would be hard to do with proper mapping software and proper care to input the coordinates of the airports and program in a little bit to make it work.

I looks like Salt Lake City is on the north rim of the Grand Canyon..cool!

It lies in a bunch of overlapping routes. Seems to me if it was in the right place it would not be so cluttered.

It looks like a group of 3rd graders made this map. Denver is right next to Albaquerque, Burbank is on the Sierra Nevada mountains, Oakland looks like it's on the California/Oregon border. Get it right. Airtran and Southwest maps look much better.

It's very nice! Really, the cities are a little to south but this isn't a geography lesson... so it's all good.

I agree that it's flawed, but it's a vast improvement over what it used to look like [that's also kind of the point of this thread]. Most people just want to see where JetBlue flies to, not that Denver is farther south on the map then it should be.

My biggest complaint on the old route map was that LGA was placed south of JFK when technically it's not, but that at least was addressed.

Still, unless we're talking about mapquest.com or Rand McNally, this IRM looks pretty good to me.

Any plans on getting a seat map on the booking page (before booking the flight)? I've requested that numerous times but nothing has shown up yet. Hopefully more people will request it. It's a nice feature.

Ahh...but that's the point. Who cares that they used to have LGA and JFK comparably misplaced? New Yorkers!! Not all, but some. It says that the mapmaker was sloppy, or that the airline doesn't care about details.

I'd be willing to bet a large number of JetBlue passengers never look at the map on the website. So what does it matter? To the people who look at the map, if THEIR city is wildy misplaced...and they are the people who are most likely to notice it...it says something about the airline. And how the airline seemigly perceives their city.

It's kind of like Delta misprinting Fort Myers as "Fort Meyers" in national print ads last year. Think anyone didn't know they meant Fort Myers? Of course not...everbody knew what they meant. And that's the point of communication, right? So attention to detail doesn't matter as long as people know what you mean?? Of course it does when you're a business trying to create and maintain an image.

I see that the Dominican Rep. is shown on their map. Are there plans of B6 flying to the DR ? If they do then it will be a huge market for them

I think it is a great improvement so who cares if it is a little off. Lots of European airlines are extremely off on US maps, by having SEA next to SFO and they are both where like LAX should be and have BOS where NYC is is and NYC by IAD. SO yes it could use a little fine tuning but it is a HUGE improvement.

They fly to STI already and use to have SDQ but scrubbed it a while ago.

Yep they already fly to STI. SDQ operated for 7 months before it was discontinued. I guess it isn't a huge market for them...but PR is.

Update:

They just fixed SLC and DEN so they are where they are supposed to be and some others were shifted a little bit. But you can notice the SLC and DEN difference the most.

Yep, it surely was adjusted. However, I just noticed IAD-LAS is listed as a non-stop, but LAS-IAD isn't. In any case, it's not a non-stop flight, though you can connect through LGB (I believe it's direct).

Much better! A handfulr of cities are still mildly to moderately out of whack, but the worst of them are in much better position. Responsiveness is a great trait!

It's still messed up.

Newark Airport looks like it's in Delaware

Orlando looks to be where Jacksonville is located.

Richmond VA looks like it's in North Carolina.

Washington Dulles looks like it's in Richmond VA.

And BTV seems to have been relocated to around Watertown, NY - pretty cute. BTV is Northeast of New York, but on the map it's totally Northwest. A rather large error, really - but is it significant? Not really; although it's far enough off that if I didn't already know they flew to BTV, and looked for it on the map, I might not have found it. Hopefully they'll fix that one soon, too, if only to stop annoying guys like me from complaining.  Wink

As a computer guy, i have to say that I am 99% sure their reasoning for locations like EWR, JFK and LGA being out of whack is because since they are so close to eachother geographically, it would make is difficult for normal web users to click on the city they want to click on. So to make it easier, they most likely set them far apart on purpose. Also it looks cleaner and the city labels aren't overlapping eachother.
The important thing is that they are clickable, easy to read and the map is user friendly. The last thing they care about is getting the geography correct since most people don't care and won't scrutinize they map as much as you guys are doing here.
