Can QR Change The LoI For The A350 To The 787-10?

Fri Dec 23, 2005 4:03 am

I was wondering that it seems that Boeing will more than likely go ahead with the 787-10 would QR be interested in that plane and order that instead of the A350 despite signing the LoI with Airbus for the A350?

I bet you'd love that wouldn't you.  Yeah sure

I believe they could hypothetically but It's very unlikely to happen.

I was looking for the possibilities since QR has not signed it's final order (why?) for the A350 and that perhaps they want to look at the 787-10.

Can they? probably, there could be some penalities involved. Will they? More than likely, they will not.

There's no firm contract, QR can do whatever the hell they want.  Wink

I believe it's extremely unlikely that QR would change their order at present, but it would be smart business to pressure Airbus to come down on their offering price by showing "interest" in the 787-10X

At the time of QR's LoI for the A350, they knew the B787-10 was more than likely to go ahead. The question then and now was exactly when. I doubt the very small amount of new information would be enough to change QR's mind.

They certainly could, but since Boeing has given Qatar's production slots to Qantas, they would move to the back of the line for 787 deliveries, which is now in the 2011-2012 time frame. The A350 will be available earlier and QR no doubt negotiated a sharp deal as a key launch customer, so I would be very, very surprised to see them change their mind.

They are waiting to see what EK does. Qatar wants to compete with EK. That is their long-term market strategy. They signed the LoI in the first place because they thought, as did many people here at a.net, that an EK A350 order was imminent at Paris. If EK eventually decides on the A350, the QR order would probably be firmed up quickly. If EK goes with the B787 instead, I think all bets are off as far as a QR A350 order goes.

Well their slots were for the 787-8 for 2008 but the -10 was never intended to be introduced before 2012 so EK and QR would be be able to pick up the planes in that time frame. also the production slots AFAIK are not sold out. The down side is that the -10 is available two years after the A359.

You're for the chop if they firm it up tomorrow.

Not really, I'm just speculating, I never said that they're going to do it or that they should do it.

The reason I raised it is because the QR like EK wants a highly efficient 300 seater.

Since QR only signed LoI with Airbus, they can switch to 787-10X with little or no penalties (other than some goodwill between QR and Airbus)

I seriously doubt QR will go with 787-10X, unless Boeing somehow get the EIS of -10X prior or at least the same year as A359.

Why offend a supplier AND get your plane 2 years later than planned?

It might be a situation where the longer QR waits the sharper Airbus' pencil gets. QR can easily hold the order off as long as they want - it's Airbus that needs the order and it's a buyers market. I have no doubt that Boeing is also sticking their finger in the pie to stir things up a bit.

Really? Who told you that? Seriously, the fleetmanager of QR is not going to browse these forums to make up his mind on what to order. As far as the EK order goes, analysts predicted an order in Paris, nothing was ordered, so they predicted an order in Dubai, no order there for the A350/787, now they moved their prediction to the Singapore airshow in februari.

Anyway, back to the topic. I believe QR is allowed to change their fleet plans without much fuzz, just as QF could still cancel their 787 order and go for the A350 instead. However, would they want to? Both will probabply stick to their choice. It took UPS 11 months to firm up their A380s, QR has plenty of time to firm up their order.

Very well put! I also think that QR will go ahead with the A350's but we will likely see additional 772LR and 773ER orders.

Rubbish! Although true that QR and EK are competitors, I don't think their order depends on what EK will do. I think they are rather waiting to see if Airbus will get their act together after the delivery delays of the A380's. QR cannot afford delays with their very tight and massive expansion program. Same applies for EK and EY.
