Why Do LCC Like Using"Jet"In Their Names?

Fri Dec 23, 2005 3:05 pm

I was having one of those mindless wandering moments and it struck me as odd that so many LCC have chosen to use "Jet" in their names. Why is that?

Did they? The most LCCs (90%) I know don`t have "Jet" in their name.  Smile

Well in the United States we have several LCC and only one of them has Jet in their name...According to Wikipedia the following are considered a LCC
AirTran Airways
Allegiant Airways
American Trans Air
Frontier Airlines
Independence Air
JetBlue Airways
Primaris Airlines
Song
Southwest Airlines
Spirit Airlines
Sun Country Airlines
Ted
USA 3000 Airlines
US Airways

I think you're referring to "regional" carriers, rather than LCCs. Many regional carriers were, at one time, truly regional. They flew small turboprops and recips, and the word "jet" helps (in marketing-speak) to counter that puddlejumping (I hate that term) prop image they might have earned in the past.

I was thinking in terms of globally and the names we see in the title of threads on this site. Perhaps my view is distorted from a Canadian perspective in that all our LCC have "Jet" in their names:WestJet,CanJet and until earlier this year, Jetsgo. Other names that I recall in recent threads are JetStar,JetBlue,EasyJet and I'm sure others can add a few more names.

Maybe a Canadian perspective is what you may have meant to say. What I believe 9252fly was trying to hit on was that there are some LCC globally that like to use the word "Jet" in their names.

I think 2H4 hit the nail on the head with his comments. They are trying to portray a more sophisticated image than they had in the past. They don't want to be seen as "Cheap" airlines that fly old "Propeller" driven airplanes. That is what many people may imagine when they think of a LCC.

Merry Christmas all and a high flying new year.

Consider Jet Airways in India - anything but a LCC...wonder why they chose such a singularly unimaginative name....didn't they foresee that sooner or later thay would have to purchase aircraft like ATR's, making a joke of their own name...?

Also Webjet of Brazil is another LCC. There are many LCCs that use jet in their names but they are not a majority...

With the high likelihood of an increase in the price of aviation fuel in the future,is it possible that we could see a change in thinking with people deciding that propeller planes are more environmentally friendly? We may then see names like PropBlue,EasyProp and so on.

Yeah, I think it is all about reassurance that you will get a "real" a/c, NZ regionals (all under the Air NZ Link umbrella) are exclusivley prop jobs.

I can imagine the alternative names:

Mount Cook Propways

Nelson Props

etc etc
