NW LAX-NRT Back To 747-200 In January?

Sat Dec 24, 2005 7:45 am

I just noticed that NW1 is showing as a 747 instead of a 744 starting January 9th. I thought the classics were gone for good on this sector! Anybody know what's going on? Where is the 744 going instead?

NW brought some 747-200's back into service after we parked some 400's. We weren't as successful in renegotiating leases with the 747's as were were with the narrowbodies. So we brought a few of the generic whales back into service.

Thanks for the info...I'm gonna have some unhappy business class clients because of this, but so it goes.

Rumor has it becoming a 330-200 when the next 2 are delivered early next year.

The schedule shows that it's a 747 and not a 744 even in the summer months. I've been thinking about going to Asia this summer, but not if I have to do LAX-NRT on a 747 with the old WBC.

I am not an expert on NWA schedules but couldn't a 747 mean that the flight could be either a 742 or a 744 depending on the loads of the flight? I know that Iberia puts down A340 instead of A343 or A346 when the aircraft has not yet been assigned.

Three B744s were sent to MZJ but two of them have since come back. Unless there are some B744s being stored somewhere else.

Can't be sure, but i'm just going by what an ANC-based captain on my crew the other day said.

That is funny a lot of NWA people were saying that they needed to cut JFK so that the 747-400 could be used for Los Angeles... Or was the just another NWA hogwash story?

Hmm... 742 from Los Angeles, again... Wow, that has mean Northwest Airlnes M.O. over the past few years. 747-200, 747-400, 747-200, 747-400, ? We will have to wait and see. It has been said as above that people at NWA were stating that the 747-400 was pulled from JFK to be used in Los Angeles.

Will be nice to see the classic in LAX again. The old WBC seat IMHO is better then the new WBC anyways the only thing lagging is the entertainment.

I found the NW 747classics to be really comfy in WBC and spacious especially on the maindeck when i flew them from BKK to NRT a few years ago.I also flew them back from NRT to SIN in Y..but since there were only a handful of paxs...i was able to get a whole row of 4 seats to myself so was quite good.Cant say much for the service though.I actually found the american male purser so much more friendlier than the asian female FA that was serving in the WBC cabin. She had the longest face..almost dragging on the floor.Likewise for the return..the female american purser was friendly n smiling..but the asian crews were terrible.1 even told off a pax for asking for a singaporean newspaper saying that 'we are not SQ'.

There is 1 747-400 in storage, 1 in a heavy check. We have heard that when the next 330-200 arrive early next year the 2 747-400 will be pulled put back in service along with the 2 330-200 and that will be it for the 4 747-200 in service.

It is interesting how all feel different. Aside from the IFE, I too prefer the older -200 over the Pacific. Anyone over 6 ft. is quite uncomfortable in the newer cocoon seating which I find to be very confining and sacrifices lateral space. Give me the old "Barkalounger" anyday over those cocoons! Aside from that, there is not much left flying today that looks as good as those JT9D's out over the Pacific....

The -400 was pulled from JFK because it wasn't profitable. Its use on the LAX routing was a result of that, not the cause of that. JFK-NRT will return with the arrival of the 787.

I'm 6'7", and I absolutely have to agree.

As to the IFE, on those rare occasions when I find myself tossed onto CA, MU, UA or NW across the Pacific (rather than, say, NH, JL, CX or the like), I've found the best way to make the flight better is to order a special meal in advance, bring a very thick paperback, an iPod with a battery-extender, and a pair of noise-canceling headphones. Makes the long-hauls seem a bit shorter...

So in other words is it true that the 747-400 was pulled from JFK to operate LAX-NRT, if so where is the LAX 747-400 going to? Wont NWA have the oldest equipment on the LAX-Asia market if they roll out a 747-200 on LAX-NRT again?

That was the plan, however NWA ended up parking 3 B744s as part of its Ch11 filing. While a couple have returned, they are still short B744 aircraft due heavy checks that are in progress.

Looks like it did go back to a -200. You'd think with the discontinuing of JFK and the GUM incident they'd have enough 744's . Or maybe they're in MZJ awaiting more favorable terms  Smile

Well, that would just be stupid. They would raise their CASM, decrease profit potential and lose major capacity on a high traffic route
