B6 From SEA To IAD?

Sun Dec 25, 2005 8:25 am

Hi there! This question is more the B6 people. Does anyone think B6 will start a SEA-IAD run anytime soon? FlyI flew it along with UA and AS, briefly, but I don't know how their loads were running.

Considering how abysmal DH's loads were, on most nights there were less than 30 IAD local pax, B6 would need a lot more connecting opportunities than just FLL from IAD to make it viable (ok, come Jan17 BOS is a possible connection too, but SEA has a BOS non-stop with B6 already). DH's flight really only worked when they had good connections.

Alaska flies to IAD mostly due to the fact that DCA is slot limited and they can't (yet) get a slot for a red-eyd to DCA. Should AS get an extra slot into DCA, I wouldn't be surprised to watch them leave IAD just as Frontier did when they got their third DCA slot.

United's IAD flights work because of their hub, plain and simple.

If B6 wanted to grow in Seattle, there are better places than IAD.

I agree completely. The next step for B6 at IAD shouldn't include SEA. I could see SEA-EWR or SEA-ONT/LGB but not IAD.

I would guess that there is more potential in SEA-FLL for B6. While Florida is no where near the number one leisure destination for people from the West Coast, SEA is big enough and has enough demand to Florida for there to be potential. Also there is currently no nonstop SEA-FLL service. AS only flies SEA-MIA and SEA-MCO.

B6 would succeed on the route where as DH never had a prayer.

But, B6 also knows damn well that AS will fight them to the death if B6 were to start that route. Plus, AS already flies DCA-SEA and IAD-SEA, not to mention the 2-3 flights that UA flies. So, that market (for now) is pretty well covered between AS and UA.

Did the flights go out well (is it still around?) Where does DH still fly to from IAD? (destinations).

I think B6 could pull off this flight, although I agree with many of the previous posters in that there are better routes to serve from SEA and IAD, and I think that once/IF B6 moves over to MIA (anyone know whats up with that by the way?) we could see a new flight to SEA.

Merry Christmas,

most SEA flights were over 60% full on DH as far as I knew, it was fuel that caused DH to withdraw, but SEA did very well, oh you mean just local pax, hmm I may say maybe less for DH, but DH sure had good transfer traffic to SEA

Prior to September loads were overall pretty good. The planes were mostly full of connecting passengers, top destinations I recall were New York (JFK and SWF), Boston and assorted Florida and South Carolina cities. Local passengers to IAD were usually the minority, normally numbering between 20 and 30, although I recall a few nights with less than 5 IAD pax even though flight was booked to 100+.

Starting in September when DH started cancelling connecting flights left and right passenger numbers started to fall while the number of angry passengers increased. By the time they gave up and announced that they were leaving Seattle bookings dropped drastically and suddenly, which gives you an idea of how far in advance passengers were buying tickets. By the end of September average loads had droped from over 120 to between 70 and 90 and continued to drop until their last flight at the end of November.

Thanks for all your input. I don't think the A320 can make the nonstop between FLL and SEA.

Isn't IAD-SEA a primarily United market though?
What now?

I didn't see much of an ad from DH on SEA market. Also, I think 2x daily to select destinations is better than once a day to many more markets. B6 pulled the noon SEA-JFK flight because yields were just not there. DH should have concentrated on SFO and LAX flights with more freq.

UAL will not let these flights go to the competition. Besides, DH can sell a seat for SEA-IAD-anydomesticdest. On the same route UAL can put a SEA-IAD-ZRH for $$$$ more than DH.

B6 doesn't even have enough destinations to feed the SEA-IAD flight.. On the other hand I would expect ONT-SEA with EMB190s maybe

It wasn't really yields as much as it was seasonality. The summertime is busier for SEA-JFK than the wintertime. However, this summer the second flight is scheduled to come back.

As far as IAD-SEA, I'm not so sure about that. JetBlue recently launched BOS-SEA and they're far from impressed.

Let's see what happens.

I guess SEA is a pretty hard sell. People here seem to be loyal to AS, or maybe there just isn't a market for SEA-BOS bigger than AS.
