No complaints here. I can remember the days - not to long ago - when flying international out of Beijing meant a limited choice of international hubs. The global airline gold rush into China is a huge boon for those of us on the ground in the Middle Kingdom - and the growing throngs trying to get here.

The challenge for GF, EK, and QR in coming to PVG or PEK is that it makes very little sense to connect via the Gulf from Europe. This would leave the Gulf carriers reliant on the traffic they can generate from Southwest Asia and Africa.

And there's probably some good money in that traffic, but I wonder if these will ever be routes for A340-600/747/A380 aircraft.

EK havent cancelled their plans for PEK...they have merely postponed their Feb 1st launch to a few months later due to unavailability of suitable aircraft.

Yes EY too is almost confirmed to launch China flights nonstop from its AUH hub from late next year with A 332s.

GF has to ensure that its BAH-PVG flights connect with its onward flights to CAI, JNB, RUH, JED, DXB, LHR, CDG and FRA both ways!!!

There is a sizeable trade traffic between the middle east & china, and from the looks of it, it is set to increase 'dramatically' over the few coming years, so I guess its natural that airlines 'follow the money'.

GF doesn't have the best track record in the world.

How many passengers can they honestly capture to CAI, JNB, RUH, JED, DXB, LHR, CDG and FRA? The last four already have at least daily nonstop service, and the first four are hardly fonts of huge traffic levels.

Traveling LHR-BAH-PVG involves a 30% mileage penalty. How many passengers will endure a huge time penalty rather than go nonstop (BA, MU, VS) or connect on AF, AY, AZ, KL, LH, OS, SK, or SU?
