Question About 747-400 Flight Deck Lighting

Mon Dec 26, 2005 4:52 am

This is just a picayune question arising from my viewing the photos on this site that are available when one executes a photo search under "747-400" and "flight deck" in the relevant fields.

The 747-400's flight deck is beautiful, whether viewed during day or night. However, one thing I've noticed in the night shots is a condition concerning the illumination lights for the thin horizontal "ledge" right beneath the front windshields, casting light on the controls just above and to the interior side of the steering columns. The condition, specifically, is that in some of the pictures, a few of the illumination elements appear to have been "burnt out", judging from the dark spots in the parts that are illuminated. Is this an artifact of the various photos, or is it indeed true that these lighting elements (diodes? small incandescent bulbs?) are indeed "burnt out" or otherwise inoperative?

Comparing the flight deck of the 777-200 with that of the 747-400, the illumination strips of the former are consistently bright along their entire length in all the various photos I've seen here, whereas the same cannot be said of the 747-400's.

Is there are reason that the lighting strips for the 747-400 seem to contain such dark elements, or is this just an illusion? If they're not an illusion, is the effect actually more pronounced in photographs versus when viewed by the naked eye?

Thanks in advance for your answers.

I think you're referring to the Mode Control Panel (MCP) which has all the autopilot controls. The 744 has the same panel as the 757 and 767 and indeed features lots of tiny bulbs and sometimes some of them are indeed burnt out. The 777 has a light strip there, just like the 737.

Thanks for the reply. That's interesting! Does this mean that the 777's and 737's lights for the equivalent area are less prone to burn out, since they are light strips versus a number of tiny bulbs? Thanks again.
