Finnair 757 At MIA?

Mon Dec 26, 2005 11:20 am

Hey everyone,
Ok, while taxing out for take-off at MIA on 12/23 I noticed a Finnair 757 arriving at the gate which I thought it was really weird, as far as I know, currently Finnair is not flying the HEL-MIA route and if they are didn't they use the MD-11 instead?? I really think it must be a connecting flight..

Thanks

I have flown Finnair's charters on B752 from HEL to the Canary Islands (6h) but not sure if I would like to try that to MIA... atleast would need shorter legs.

I wonder why Finnair fly B752 charters under the same name, I think it would be better for the brand to keep the holiday flights separated from the "real thing".

Yeah, I've wondered about the same thing. It's sad to see people complaining about "Finnair's service levels" after they've bought a heavily discounted vacation from a tour operator. You'd think they'd know what they're paying for, but no...

Well I see the only difference is in legroom.

AY scheduled charges for drinks in Y and serves food that CX/MH/TG/CI/PR etc would call a snack as "dinner" or "lunch" in cattle class.

AY scheduled long haul serves wine, beer and bubbly for free, and only charges for hard liquor. I think it's perfectly reasonable to ask people who want more alcohol to pay.

As for the food, I've never had anything to complain about. I'm sure it's not as good as CX, but it's never bad, mostly ok, and sometimes great. If I wanted more, I'd expect to pay for a business class ticket. What flight were you on?

Tons of HEL-BKK and HEL-JFK (or vv.). Never a choice, always the same salad, dessert is a twix bar or other chocolate, and the main course is tiny.

Me too, I pay for C class usually, but AY Y class isn't exactly a culinary highlight, I assume the 757 charters get the same meals...

Also, having the same menu for 4 months+ on SIN/HKG-BKK in business is getting a bit boring (no complaints about the food though).

I guess I don't fly on the same routes often enough to notice. I'll try to remember to examine what they're serving when I'm off to BKK in February  Smile .

More like the other way around. Finnair is such a respected name in Finland that tour operators can even charge some extra when their flights are flown by AY. Finnair has been considering about separating the leisure operation from scheduled for years but at the moment it is seen as part of the company's core operations, so it is likely to stay this way. Hopefully they will soon paint the 5 752s remaining in old colors to the new ones, or come up with a modified scheme.

Nope. As stated earlier it is a weekly leisure-flight HEL-YHZ-MIA for the winter schedule.

Finnair has a shortage of MD11s at the moment - they are launching new routes to Asia and doing some interior upgrades to the MD11 fleet, thus the MD11 will not be operating a MIA-HEL schedule this winter.......instead, the 752 is being used with a fuel stop enroute at Halifax. Finnair has used the 757 on Florida services in the past.

Due to the big Asian market its more profitable to use a 757 to MIA, I think. Its great that we have such a big Asian gateway in North Europe. Personally I think that Finnair will be the leading airline of Scandinavia some day.  Smile

No offence to Swedes, Norwegians and Danes and their SAS, but I think Finnair already is that.  Wink

'Leading' = 'larger'???

WordReference.com:

'Leading' =
"showing the way"
"indicating the most important performer"
"greatest in importance or degree"
"having the leading position or higher score"

In my opinion, AY is truly showing the way how airline business can be done successfully in Scandinavia (Nordic Countries) nowadays.

Yes, dumping unnecessary capacity to the North Atlantic.

Agree 100%. SK should have dropped ARN-EWR, ARN-ORD, CPH-IAD and others months ago - too much competition and too low yields.

AY does fine with 5x weekly HEL-JFK and AA connections ex-JFK/LHR/CDG/FRA etc. SK should take some notice...

Finnair may be "showing the way" in profitability, but I would certainly hesitate to call it more important, or say it has a leading market position...

Well, due to my sorce of information at SK ARN-EWR and ARN-ORD are actually two routes SAS is making money on. ARN-ORD have alot of business pax.

The few times I have flown longhaul ex-ARN, I have always been upgraded to Business. Obviously there's no problem with loads but yields instead, just like with BKK/SEA.

Finnair is also using a 757 on the HEL-CUN flight (via YHZ).
Next flights: YQM-YOW-YOW / YQM-YYZ-CPH-YYZ-YQM / YQM-YUL-LYS-BRU-YUL-YQM / YQM-PUJ-YQM

Finnair is supposed to return to 2x-3x weekly MD11 service to MIA next winter as aircraft should be available, though they are rapidly expanding more in Asia, so it is not for certain.

Perhaps AY's A340 will be seen in MIA or JFK sooner than expected, heard said here they are trying to find the first A340 next year already, instead of the 8th MD-11.

Charters out of MAN and LGW, those sort of routes.

Unfortunately the company taking them on ACMI folded this year when their bakers pulled out. Air Scandic had been a longtime partner of AY. So 2006 may or may not see them return depending on whether Finnair can find the work for them from other flight agents.

Finnair could put them up for sale or lease before much longer as they were bought principally for charter work, but the PW2000 engines may make them hard to sell on. The airline has leased out excess capacity in the past.
Lead me not into temptation, I can find my own way there...
