Fly-Over Rights

What particular countries do American carriers not have fly-over rights? I remember asking a captain of an American carrier about flying over Cuba; he said that fly-over rights are granted over Cuba, with the American government's reciprocating by granting fly-over rights to Cubana on flights from Cuba to Canada.

I assume your talking comercial flights?

Most countries where one carrier from each country flies to the other, have arrangment's in place to honour such flights.

Private flights & Cargo flights:

Permits required just about everywhere...except countries within the EU.

Yes...commercial...passenger or cargo. This is really more in a political context. I had in mind countries like Iran or North Korea....no diplomatic relations are established directly between those countries and the US (I think that diplomatic communications are channeled through the Swiss). Both countries lie on possible routes...Tokyo to Beijing and US to India via Europe. NWA's diversion due to mechanical problems to Tehran a few months ago piqued my curiosity.

Overfly rights are very indept and complicated subject which I could discuss at length as they touch on bilateral air agreements and for the most part require reciprocity.

However not to get too deep into the subject and to answer specifics about countries like North Korea, Iran, Cuba yes all gladly allow US airlines to make use (and pay) for overflying their airspace.

All the countries sit in geographically desirable spots that allow airlines to save significant sums of money in fuel cost and time by traversing them.

Even with restrictions in place as with Cuba were US companies cannot do direct business nor use dollars, alternate methods have been established. For Cuba's case overflight fee's are paid to a Cuban representative firm in Panama were the dollar happens to be the legal currency anyways.

If I'm not mistaken, N. Korea, has virtually no over-flight rights with any "western" country. In fact, I think PRC is the only country that has any type of over-flight rights with them and they are extremely limited.

Are the MAYA and GIRON overfly corridors over Cuba still there? Have they added a third after all these years (since I last worked in the area)?

Incorrect. Several carriers (including US ones) traverse N Korean airspace, particularly on services from South Korea and also China.

Matter of fact I was recently dealing with some North Korea overflight permitting issues working out entry/exit points.

Unless you are a FB111 on the way to bomb Libya you ought to be able to get fly over rights of France private or commercial.  wink
