Airport Vienna

Tue Dec 27, 2005 6:51 pm

The Airport Vienna(Austria) is going to buy the Airport Bratislava only 60 kilometers away. Will this Airportlink become an important point for travallers from east to west?

I somewhat doubt it - 60km is simply too far away to make any reasonable type of connections between the two airports: just take a look at the awful LHR/LGW situation - I really wouldn't want VIE and/or OS to suffer from something as bad as that!!!

It's probably more of a purchase to have influence over the growth of BTS - to be able to profit from Low Cost operators flying there (while mostly keeping them out of VIE... see FRA and HHN as example) while keeping VIE's focus on non-LoCo operators.

It is more a means to protect the monopolist price structure (some of the highest airport charges in all of Europe) of Vienna Airport against possible competitors than the attempt at a real airport system.

It may become something like the combination of HHN and FRA in Germany - one airport geared towards low cost carriers and some cargo services somewhere in the boondocks, and one central airport for "quality carriers" and express cargo services and those with a high percentage of commercial uplift.

I have to agree with what TriStar500 said. Quite a few people from Austria got used to the low-fair concept that, for example, Sky Europe offered from Bratislava and they were willing to travel the 60 km. in a bus to get to the city and fly cheaply.

Obviously, that couldn't be of Vienna's airport liking, so they simply bought it. Already in October BTS catered for more than a million passengers, which is quite a lot for such a small country (and capital city).

I don't know how much truth there is in this, but when I was last in Slovakia (about a year ago), rumors had it that Vienna airport wanted BTS mainly for cargo and that they were planning to terminate all passenger operations there. However, I imagine they couldn't do that now, since the place has been growing massively and the low-cost market is a pretty lucrative one. Not mentioning the protest that would surely follow after such a step...

I know half a dozen of Slovaks and they ALL travel out of VIE. They take a bus to VIE from BTS and fly out of Vienna.
Many, many Slovaks use VIE as their home airport, so the Vienna Airport intention of converting BTS a cargo airport only is a great and viable idea. But the problem is the SkyEurope and Ryanair, the only two low-cost serving BTS. They certainly would not like to pull out by force from this lucrative market.
But there is a solution to this as well. They can "give" BTS to Vienna Airport and fly themselves to Brno, about 60km as well from BTS, in Czech Rep. Ryanair actually flies there. And they can have a ferry to BTS.
Just some ideas.

i heard ideas, such as the new, Austrian owners plan to develop BTS mainly as a charter and cargo flight operation center and divert scheduled flights to VIE. It would make sence, since there's no need to provide efficient connections BTS-VIE, as long as BTS becomes a charter destination.
Also, Ryanair already warned the buying consortium "onetwo" of raising airport fees...
Any closer opinion/concern from local, Slovakian a.netters would be apprechiated. Thanks!

I can't belive that the airport Vienna is going to close all PAX-flights in BTS. But for making it an Charter-Airport as well as for making a real airport-link there should be much better connection between the two airports, a highspeed-train f.e.!

They won´t. BTS is planned to be the Low Cost Airport, while VIE will be the Airport for legacy Carriers and Longhaul, although i doubt that AB or 4U will move their Flights to BTS instead of VIE.
