TWA/Delta Will Die From US/UA Merger!

Fri May 26, 2000 8:11 am

I was thinking, TWA will be wiped out from existance if this merger goes through. Now USAirways and United flights will be feedign into O'Hare for connections, while TWA will be left alone (if you count Royal Air Maroc at JFK as "feeding into flights", think again). Delta will be losing a lot of money off of CVG, because of ORD and PIT being very close, and also losing money off of ATL because of CLT being so close. One advantage is that Delta will be the dominant carrier at both LGA and DCA if the anti-tryust people make UA/US give up most routes there. Do you think any airlines would team up now? I heard that Delta wants to buy America West and so does Continental, but it would seem more reasonable that Continental buy Northwest to compete with US/UA.

Hi! My dad works for Delta and said to not be surprised if you hear an announcement about DL, he says Delta is looking into buying both Continental and AmWest...

There is no way that CO can buy NWA. NWA is much bigger and in much better shape, and anyways, NWA already owns a small stake in CO. If anything happens, NW will buy CO, but very unlikley.

I don't think this will hurt Delta too much. Part of Delta's strategy is to move slowly and methodically.

TWA, on the other hand, well, the jury is still out on that one.

Mr. Mullin and a few other Delta Executives have been spotted in both Houston and Phoenix during the past few weeks. Pilots around the airline are saying exactly what AirT85 is saying. Delta and Continental have been patching up their relations after the attempted takeover a few years back. The fleets would match nearly perfect (except engines) and the airline would be amazing. Now about AWA, well all I can say is anyone who can buy them needs to.

Nobody is going to buy anybody, do you really believe the goverment will allow everybody to consolidate and have only 3 or 4 majors, c'mon.

Well if they allow one big merger (us-ua) then theyve got to allow others, it just may very well happen

The government already set a precedent during the last round of consolidations when they allowed the TWA/Ozark and Northwest/Republic mergers. Both of these deals involved well in excess of 75% overlap and created something like 80% dominance in STL, MSP and DTW. Prior to the mergers none of these carriers had much more than a 50% share in those markets.

The Justice Department will be hard pressed to tiptoe around that precedent given that this deal at most presents around 15% overlap, a 26% total market share and single digit increases in dominance in the affected hub markets. You can bet they will debate and examine the s&#t out of it but in the end Justice will have to be awfully creative to tap dance around their own record.

Good lord!
Noone's going to die....mkay?
O.K.
Let's put two and two together.
ABC airlines decides to merge with DEF airlines.
SO WHAT!
So now when you fly from LGA-ROC
your plane won't be black and gray, yet blue and gray.
Come on, I've seen children make less fuss.

Continental has no business merging with Delta. CO's
service is superior in every way. Delta has a an older,
incompatible fleet, the two airlines overlap a lot on
the East Coast and across the Atlantic as well as to
Latin America. Continental has much better, more
reliable service and is overall a better managed air-
line. Just look at how much Delta is wasting redoing
its livery, yet again!

As for TWA, well as someone already has said, the
jury is indeed still out on that. TWA is a basketcase
and no one would want to merge with it. The St.
Louis hub is not all that attractive (the facilities
are in need of a facelift and the route structure is
quite poor).

If the industry continues its consolidation (that is
if the DOJ allows UA to buy US Airways) I would
imagine that Continental and Northwest would
merge. American and Delta are too big to merge
with anyone, and would probably just snap up
America West and Alaska Air.

TWA Is Hardly A Basketcase!

Fri May 26, 2000 12:51 pm

I love the BS from COEWR!

A basketcase... Yeah right that is why TWA is number one in operational preformance and the only other carrier to rank better then average along with CO.

TWA has a very very strong midwest, middle east and caribbean presence!

Nuff said! They control around 5% of the US traffic and that means they are approx. 1/3 - 1/4 the size of UA or AA before the announced UAL/USAir merger!

Alaska and Am. West combined are not a big as TWA. Trash it if ya want but, The carrier is flying a relatively new fleet. (Soon to be entirely new by YE 2001) and has an excellent reputation with those who actually fly it instead of trashing it when they haven't flown TWA in 5-10 years.

Oh yeah! TWA also has one of the best safety records in the biz 1 fatal accident in 21 years (TWA 800 JFK-CDG) and that official cause is still in the air and very suspect. (Missle, Fuel Pump, Wiring?)

Look at AA/DL/US/NW all have had far more fatal accidents in the same time period. As a matter of fact only UA/HP/AS are as good or better amongst the majors!

STL would be good for CO who has a marginal midwest presence and the caribbean and middle east would be valuable.

As for TWA... I think that when you look at the stock price and the trained pilots (some of the best in the biz) along with the new fleet and some gem routes it might make sense!

NWAC is going take serious money in fleet upgrades and DTW and MEM are far worse then STL IMHO! MSP is similar but, has better shops and restarants...

Time will tell who is right!

Just because your dad has said it, doesn't make it true. No one at CO has said anything about DL looking at us.

I am so sick of hearing how superior CO is in every way to DL AA or any other airline. Obviously some people on this board are brainwashed.I have flown on CO numerous times they are good, but are not "superior" or "better in every way" this is just BS!

UAL Isnt That Good

Sat May 27, 2000 5:23 am

Last time i flew UAL, it was horrible, i dont think they should expand without seeing what is happening to their serbice, 3 years ago they were my favorite airline, but now i would rather fly Aeroflot than UA.

Never underestimate the geniuses who run the govt...In 1943 there were 43 major railroads.....Through mergers and bankruptcies there are 2 in 2000,

LAXFLYER --

management decisions are management decisions ... when CO becomes employee owned then Gordon will address you. as of right now you probably work the ticket counter or ramp and see the same 15-20 airplanes a day and wish you were aboard. Gordon could be getting ready to shut down the airline, and you would be the last to know. Sorry but that is how the airlines work with the little people.

i love people with a sense of humor ... people are so serious about this board. it drives me crazy ... whenever i say something off the wall i get airline worshipers going off... i mean lighten up... there will be a time in the not to distant future where you will all be flying my airline. as for the closed minded many ... your favorite airline seems to be the one in the city that you live in ... ContinentalEWR says it all ... DeltaAIr you live in ATL or work for DL. i mean get a grip ... work at work, talk and chat and not be so serious all the time ... all the stress will only make mandatory retirement for pilots decrease again.
good willed and open minded i leave you in peace...
2 sides to every tale ... 2 views on every take ... yours and someone elses ... honor their view and they will do the same.

CSX and Burlington Northern MegaRail wow .... i think that is only because railroads are so crappy anyways. it is all big trucks and containers. air freight and trucks are shutting down trains anyways.

US/UA is just the beginning of the end of the popular 10 airlines. soon there will be 4-6 of them. forcing the little ones out ... bye bye Spirit, National... still some hope for Frontier with A320 fam coming ...

wow things will only get more exciting....
peace
