Virgin Nigeria Plans LOS-EWR Or JFK

Wed Dec 28, 2005 1:55 am

Virgin Nigeria applied with the US DOT to offer four weekly flights between LOS and EWR or JFK with a wet-leased A-340-300 from Virgin Atlantic, given Nigeria's Category 1 status with the FAA IASA program.

If the DOT approves this, I would imagine it would be contigent on Nigerian authorities approving CO's application for EWR-LOS.

Nice one LatinAviation !

Quick and simple  Wink

I'm sure that if the US Dot approved VK's application, CO will get the green light, bringing some relief to the thousands upon thousands of passengers who would fly this direct route!

Yeah, but would CO still be interested in the route? I thought that since EWR-LOS fell through, IAH-EZE was started instead (which apparently has been doing fantastic so far) with the 762.

CO can work out a mutually beneficial agreement with VN by letting the latter fly 4 weekly to daily flights on a "codeshared" basis to its EWR hub from LOS using its own A 343s since its own cabin crew fear staying in LOS due to security problems.

In this way, CO can gain access to the all important Ghana and Nigerian markets via LOS where as VN can gain access to all major U.S. cities popular with Africans by interlining on key CO domestic routes from EWR.

Quite honestly, for all the codesharing that CO does, I don't think they'd be satisfied with letting VN just take all of the EWR-LOS pax. UA and AA might be interested in doing that with LH and BA, respectively, in Europe, but CO just doesn't sit around and let everyone go on KL through AMS. They like to fly to places with their own metal.

Why all this talk about Vietnam Airlines (VN) ???.

I though this thread was about Virgin Nigeria (VK).

You are right because of the political and the economic stability of ACC compared to LOS...plus COs crew dont mind spending the night in ACC hotels but they do in LOS due to the law & order situation being worse there.

They were going to fly a daily EWR-ACC-LOS-ACC-EWR with B 762ER but since USA Govt didnt recognize VK  Wink as a Nigerian airline due to the VS links, the LOS Govt in return banned USA airlines from Nigeria until this gets resolved. This happened around 3-4 months back.

If in fact VK does recieve DOT permission to fly to the states, look for one of the World Air Holdings companies, WOA or NAA to file for rights to LOS.

No, I don't believe the two are related. CO's proposed LOS service fell apart along ways back. Just a few months ago, DL woke up to UA's unused 7 EZE frequencies for a proposed JFK-EZE route. This got CO's attention and they realized they better submit a competing application, or else they'd likely wait years for another chance to go to Argentina. Now, it could be CO was eyeing the unused frequencies at the same time DL was, and the timing of their application was just a coincidence. But I believe the former explanation is the correct one!

And given the chance, I bet they would still be interested in LOS, as long as certain concerns be resolved.

And will all this be before or after they think of a way to fill all the gigantic potholes in the runway there -- and erect some kind of fences to keep the cows and natives off the runways?

Isn't/Wasn't Murtallah Muhammed Intl Airport in LOS on the 'DONT GO THERE' posters we all read in the airports advising us of security concerns?

Suddenly its a safe place to operate ? About the only thing right now making Nigeria any safer is that they did ground all those creepy fly by night airlines that sprung up that kept crashing (Like Chingchingblingbling and Bobolicious, or whatever their names were). So Nigeria is safer in one way right now - - you have less of a likelihood of having a 737 or DC9 in a ball of flames crashing on you now!

According to VK's 67-page application filed on Dec. 22, (which I have started to skim through last night!!!) G-VSUN is supposed to join the fleet in December 2005 (ex-Virgin Atlantic A340). Can anyone confirm this?

FS27XXX: Pot holes are no longer a problem since Runway 19R in Lagos has been finally commissioned (following total resurfacing). But you are right, LOS has a number of other operational issues to fix before they are taken seriously by FAA or any other serious regulatory agency.

In other good news, LOS is getting a brand-new, modern domestic terminal complete with aviobridges and computer-run systems in Feb 2006.

VK have moved all their operations to LGW. Only BA and VS fly LHR-LOS.

VK fly LGW-LOS, but do not fly LGW-PHC

to get to PHC from LGW on VK you need to go LGW-LOS-PHC.

as stated above, VK do not operate out of LHR.
