Surely you can dump fuel - isn't that a standard procedure to get to landing weight in an emergency?

Not the 319, or 320 as far as I've heard.

Only if the aircraft can dump fuel, which the A32X family cannot I don't believe.

Quoting KKMolokai (Reply 4):

No, it circled for several hours burning off fuel before attempting a successful emergancy landing at LAX.

Most aircraft don't have fuel dump systems-- the Airbus A30 and 737s don't.

Smile I got it, this is a new PR tactic. After B6 and YX saw a jump in calls to the reservations lines after their landings F9 figured it could get some positive PR if it did the same....lol  Smile

(and in case anyone doesn't get it, I'm kidding around, just to ward off any overzealous F9 defenders ready to go on me)

So can anyone say "overkill" with the media and the airplane emergencies?

I had a feeling that the media would be all over any aircraft returning after the jetblue incident. Maybe after this one they will realize that these returns happen on a daily basis for one reason or another and that they dont need to report every emergency.

Hahah! The newslady was told by the F9 spokesperson that "Let me stress again this is not an emergancy landing. We are simply burning off fuel to get to the required landing weight." LOL you could tell the newslady was kinda bummed out cause that comment the F9 spokesperson said kinda screwed their story/coverage up!  Smile

"The reason they're circling off of Catalina island, is to burn off fuel...They had a lot of fuel in the cargo...in the fuel tanks, because it knew it was going all the way to Denver today"

"What's the weather like at LAX? Is it clear for landing??"

It shouldn't be too big a deal I imagine as long as the a/c is kept below 10K. I'm sure there's some pilots or mx's on here who can shed some light on this...

So it has come to this, a light comes on an airplane and the 24/7 news goes bananas.  white  Didn't we have a wave of this type of coverage after the footage of the UA crash at SUX back in 1989?

From what I saw, they replaces the sensor and completed the flight to DEN.

Some of the most basic things that I have learned from participating in this site fore over a year is:

1. Not all planes can dump fuel
2. Large jets usually can, smaller ones usually cannot. A 737 or A320 cannot but a 747 can.
3. Most people post before they know what they are saying.
4. Those that do, are eligible for a career opportunity in the hated media.

Please try to search before posting. I have cancelled more posts than I have started by finding the answer to the question I was about to ask in the archives. If you do not find it on your first try, rephrase the question and try again. It usually takes a couple of tries.

I have a question, Why in an emergency do these planes circle for hours to burn off fuel? I understand that they can not "dump" fuel. But if they must fly for 3-4 hours ina 40 mile circle, why not continue on to it's destination, or at least to the airlines hub or maint. facilities?

I guess its just incase a nonserious matter turns into a serious matter. By circling over an airport, the emergency services can be prepared and waiting, while if they were en route to another destination, they would have to warn all alternates along the way.

Did you even think about this question before you wrote it??

Did you even consider the consequences of an aircraft doing this? You do realize I hope this thread concerns an aircraft with a possible open door??? Did you expect them to fly on in to DEN at 10000 feet?  sarcastic

About 25% of the posts in this thread are all that matters . . . have any content of consequence . . . the balance is pure rubbish.

The Airbus 320 family isn't equipted to dump fuel hence the reason that the airbuses have to fly around for a while. You do not dump aviation fuel over a city either so unless it is over water or uninhabited land there is no way it is dumping fuel.
