Question About Old DTW Airport

Wed Dec 28, 2005 6:39 am

There is a brown brick builidng (not the executive terminal), in the northeast corner of the airport (Meriman and (whatever the east-west road is that all the rental car places are on), its currently pretty busted up looking and surrounded by rental car lots, but does anyone know what that is and what it used to be used for?

AFAIK that is the administration building, built to accommodate airline operations and to provide more office space and was constructed in 1939.

Although the airport opened in September 1929 as Detroit-Wayne Major Airport , most traffic was out of DET and YIP. It wasn't until the late 1950's that the airlines started moving to DTW.

"American, Allegheny, Northwest Orient, Pan Am and British Overseas moved to Metro Airport from the Willow Run Airport. American inaugurated air carrier service at Metro on October 1, 1958."

The Airport was renamed Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport in 1958

hmm....makes sense, there is definately what looks like an observation tower up there. I thought that It might have been the old terminal, or the old maintence hanger. There were a lot of small airports around there back then. I was reading about the Ford field (not the football stadium) in dearborn, YIP, City, wayne county, and a couple of other smaller strips in and around se michigan

I asked in another thread and got no answer:

Buried in the GM factory closing notice was the closure of a "logistics center" in Ypsalanti. Does this mean reduced freight ops at YIP?

Maybe GM will merely outsource to job to a freight forwarder. Any thoughts?

Most freight out of YIP is AD-HOC now anyways. YIP hasn't been a big player for a few years now. Zantop is gone.Really no Kalitta, Transcon gone, only leaves USA Jet and Murrray

Another DTW-related historical question...

I know that in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, a variety of airlines kept maintenance hangars at DTW. Most of them are now either unused or have been purchased by Northwest:

- the two hangars on the east side of the terminal approach road. One still has its old "Northwest Airlines" sign, the other belongs to Spirit (it says "Fly Spirit" on it.) I seem to remember being in Detroit as a kid and seeing that hangar with a "Fly Delta" sign. Did Spirit buy it and just change the letters?

- The hangars that are now in between the two west-side runways. I believe there are two of them, and one is quite large. Did these belong to United or North Central? Both used to be quite large at DTW.

- Did American keep a hangar at DTW? They also had a reasonable presence at DTW in the pre-Deregulation days.

Thanks for your help!

88% sure that the Fly Spirit was fly Delta. I grew up around there and used to fly all the time, so I am almost positive, but for some reason I cant 100% Visualize it!

No, this is 100% correct.

I don't recall AA having an hanger at DTW. UA also had a large operation at DTW including its' own flight kitchen.

As a matter of trivia, the North Terminal, AKA the Davey Termainal, AKA the old Northwest Terminal was built for UA.

UA did indeed have an hanger.

One of those two hangers on the west side (and I think it is the one on the north side of the other) was for North Central Airlines.

I can see it on Google Earth but getting the link to this post was not successful.

I have been hoping the airport would wise up and renovate that building on the NE corner of Merriman and "Rental Car" road. This is the smaller building that used to be the original terminal back in the 30's. Would make a nice airport museum/executive terminal.

I think the Wayne County police use it now.

There was talk a few years ago that "the Henry Ford" would take it over as a museum, but that never came to fruition.

Not sure if you have google earth or not, but I assume we are talking about the same building, sort of a light orange/brown brick, long builidng, now surrounded by rental cars, This was the original terminal? Thats what I thought!
