Wed Dec 28, 2005 1:51 pm

I have been trying to figure this out for quite sometime: Where do Fedex, UPS, and DHL fly non-stop from Pittsburgh? Thanks for any help.

Just a wild guess,

FX to MEM
UPS To SDF or PHL
DHL to ILN

check out flightaware.com and you can find the flights origin and destination, might take a little digging.

DHL/ABX to ILN

And their version of an "express" affiliate, the freight runners from CVG who run the Convairs to PIT.

I noticed a couple of UPS inbounds from ONT during the holiday season. Forgive me, but is ONT a UPS hub?

Considering the massive UPS ground-hub in New Stanton (SE of PIT) it's almost surprising that UPS uses PIT over LBE... although I guess some of the bigger widebodies would still struggle at LBE. I know from a friend that supervises at New Stanton that they have alot of sorts that end up getting trucked out to Greater Pitt to be put on the planes and vice versa.

I was thinking the same thing about FX. They have the headquaters for FedEx Ground about 5 miles or so from the airport. I always wondered why we don't have more flights or larger equipment in PIT for them.

Yeah, good call, considering ABE sees more FX metal in the average night than PIT.  Silly

One of the points of the Fedex ground operation was less reliance on aircraft not more. As for UPS and LBE, the ramp space and taxiways are currently inadequate and ground handling facilities would have to be built from scratch. Cheaper to truck the air stuff to and from New Stanton. UPS also has sort facilities on the North Side and in Butler that are much better served from PIT. Another big negative is poor access to the rest of the metro area. Too far east, Route 30 is a nightmare if you are on any kind of schedule and 981/982 arent exactly suitable either.
As a sidenote, NW's RJ service to MEM from PIT serves almost as a corporate shuttle for Fedex and its various components. Without that traffic there would be no link from PIT to MEM.

Yes, ONT is UPS' west coast hub i believe

PIT does see at least 2 UPS widebodies a day
Today a DC-8 came from PHL and an A300 from SDF, the PHL flt is also an A300 here and there

Until an overpass collapses and shuts down I-70 east of the 79 split indefinitely.  Yeah sure

I agree that 30 sucks, horribly... and to be honest I don't know if 981/2 are allowable for trucks. I think they both might be weight restricted in one section or another. I forget all that data I had to map out in summer '04 working for the state. The only way would have to be 30 up through Unity Twp, then hit the Greensburg bypass section of 30, get out to 66 and then down to NS, or deal with 119/Youngwood. That would suck, I'll rescind my earlier comments.

*sarcasm alert*
Fayette County is adding that length and ILS to 5/23 at Connellsville (VVS), maybe we can get the A300's in here.  Smile UPS could get from there to New Stanton in 25 minutes on 119.

I am not sure howmany of you are familiar with all the road constructio around PIT but they are building a interchange right beside the airport for 22/30 and 60. They say that this will bring increased cargo and other stuff to the airport.

When is that interchange to be completed? It looks like it has awhile. We can only hope it brings added cargo and what not to PIT.

That's for the southern beltway project. Will connect back to 79 south of 22/30 (around Southpointe/Char Valley HS I believe) and then connects to 43 around the Finleyville exit. At the rate PA builds roads, expect it around the year 2022... and by then the overpass may come crashing down.

Im thinking that 2022 might be optimistic. That southern beltway was on the drawing boards for at least 25 years before the first dirt flew. How long have they been building sections of it? At least ten years now. They'll complete it about the same time that they get around to the third bore on the Squirrel Hill Tunnels on 376. By then LBE will be served by all of the majors with RJ's since no one east of Monroeville will be able to get to PIT in less than 2 hours. When I lived in Westmoreland County I would often fly US from LBE connecting through PIT. It took the same amount of time as driving to PIT and with free parking it was a good deal.
