Would it not be better to cancel such a flight, where only two pax on, and put them on the next flight?

My goodness I mean 2 pax in a 747??? Is that common in the airline industry?

Any news what caused the smoke?

I suppose if the plane is in JFK and is needed in LHR a few hours later, then it has to fly back anyway, so why not carry the pax anyway?

We have worked out, ahem, "elsewhere" that it was last night's delayed BA176:

BA0176 JFK CWL 27 DEC 19:30 28 DEC 01:37 Actual

Since (according to ba.com) there were other delays to the ex-JFK flights last night, my conjecture/questions were:

1. Why it was so delayed (when later flights departed before it) - problems detected at JFK in the first place?
2. Why there were only 2 pax on board a 744! Perhaps they did move everyone else from this flight to the other ones if they found problems at JFK, and the 2 were late commers/couldn't fit on the 182? Maybe BA took them on the delayed 176 which needed to get back to LHR anyway?

Shame it had to divert, but being one of only two pax on a 744 must be one hell of an experience!  Smile

If it had been UA they would have said that due to the large number of passengers they would not have time for the beverage service.

No, there were only 2 passengers on this flight to begin with. When the flight was originally delayed yesterday, all other passengers were rerouted except for these two. The flight was destined for LHR and diverted to Cardiff. They have been rerouted from Cardiff using taxis at BAs cost.

It was the second incident involving the plane in 24 hours.

Earlier, the aircraft had suffered a bird strike as it flew into New York.

This led to a six-hour delay for the plane at JFK airport.

Nearly all the passengers were put on other flights, leaving just two on board the jumbo jet when it was involved in the incident as it headed to the UK.

And bet that baby was full of cargo so maybe not a loss operating flight after all?? The 2 passengers could have actually been the crews family/friends/partners so thats why they were on board?? Just another idea?

First off: Is it possible that the Birdstrike, assuming it occured in the foreward portion of the plane and it's possible damage, may have caused some kind of undetected electrical short that with time (vibration, normal flight, ect.) broke out causing the smoke in the cockpit? Second: Even with only 19 people on board all are safe, and that's what really matters. Have a Happy New Year.

Cardiff would be the best place for BA to divert the B744 to as they have a maintenace facility there.

This must have caused a lot of excitement at CWL with an emergency landing. The fire brigade must have been thrilled to finally have something to do. If the plane had crashed on landing they would have been really confused trying to find all the passengers lol.

I once flew a normal KL 747 flight from KHI-AMS back in the 1980's where there were only 40 pax.....in fact, I thought the plane had less, but the F/A told me there were about 40........

I was thinking about asking about switching to Business class in flight, but I decided that I had 10X more room by myself near the back of the plane, most comfortable long distance economy class travel I've ever done... Big grin

Action in CWL! Too bad I did not know about this earlier. Nonetheless CWL is the best diversion point because it is not too busy and BA's facilities means that the plane could be serviced straight away.

As for there being just 2 passengers, the plane would almost certainly be full of cargo and that would have paid for the flight - any revenue passengers would simply be the icing on BA's cake. The diversion of passengers is certainly less costly than diversion of cargo!

I believe the birdstrike affected an engine and not the body of the aircraft.

The best I have ever gotten was myself and 2 other passengers on a AA 757 flight from MCO to JFK about a month after 9-11, I was in first, thanks to DCA being shut down for the time, AA upgraded me seeing I had to connect through JFK to get back to BWI. A quiet flight to say the least. The 2 in coach were offered an upgrade but chose to stay in coach and spread across the seats to sleep.
Where did everybody go?

I once non-revved on a KLM 747 with 24 pax on board between AUA-AMS. After take-off, we were all allowed to sit where we wanted, including Business Class. It was December 24th. Very cool flight.

Other reports say the smoke was detected in the passenger cabin, towards the rear of the aircraft. Maybe one of the crew smoking a cigarette?
