How often does that happen?

Turbulence Shakes Madrid-Sofia Plane, 2 Hurt

Politics: 29 December 2005, Thursday.

A Bulgaria Air plane has hit a turbulence field Wednesday night as it flew from Madrid to Sofia.

A steward's leg was broken during the shaking, and a woman suffered arm fracture. They received first aid while on board and after the plane landed in Sofia the two were immediately transported to the Military Medical Hospital.

The Boeing 737-500 hit a turbulence field above Italy's Adriatic zone. The passengers were stressed, but the board staff had the situation under control and did not allow panic or chaos, reports said Thursday.

The plane travelling from Madrid to Sofia had 100 passengers on board and landed safely in Sofia after the accident.

The injured steward is still at hospital, local Darik radio said Thursday, disclosing that the other injured person has already been let out.

Didn't know Bulgaria's airline was doing Sofia / Madrid. What the hell are they called anyway? Is "Bulgaria Air" the nom de jour? Wasn't it Balkan, subsequently run into the ground by dodgy Israeli financiers, then Hemus Air? I would really like to go to Bulgaria. Might even get a Tu154.

Anyway well done mystery Bulgarian airline, for steering your 735 through some very rough air. Hope the crew member has a speedy recovery.
fly Saha Air 707s daily from Tehran's downtown Mehrabad to Mashhad, Kish Island and Ahwaz

Bulgaria Air used to be Balkan. It was sold to a shady "businessman", but later the government took the company back and renamed it to Bulgaria Air. Now, Bulgaria Air actually makes some little profit. It should be privatized in 2006. Yes, they fly to MAD daily. Hemus Air is a separate company that is all private. Unfortunately, there are no Tu154s flying in Bulgaria except the presidential and Via Air, but they are switching to Airbus next year.

In Spain we have a little Bulgarian community, IB doesn't serve Sofia, therefore a daily 737-500 to Bulgaria is a suitable service.

Fortunately this a very good news since a fall in 70m could be fatal. Congratulations to the crew members!

Does anybody know the reg of the A/C involved? Bulgaria Air flies two ex-UA 735s LZ-BOP and LZ-BOQ. Wonder if it was one of those...
