World´s Most Modern Fleet?

Sat Dec 31, 2005 11:11 am

Why so many airlines claim that their particular fleet is the "youngest" or "most modern" of the world??? To cite some, Mexicana, Taca among others??
How can they claim something if its possibly not true?? Isn´t that illegal?
Thanks for your answers.

I would think B6 can make that claim (all A-320 series and E-190s), as well as Air Tran (all B-717s and B-737-700s). SQ would (most likely) have the youngest wide body fleet.

TA can as well -- all 319, 320, and 321s, the oldest of which was delivered in 1995, I believe.

B6, FL, F9, SQ, Air Deccan, I would like to say WN because of the vast numbers of 73G's, and WJ,FR when the last 732's are gone. JetStar and Air Arabia are some of my guesses.

Basucally they do that for Advertisding purposes fro the average public if you feel that you would fly on a "new" plane or a "modern" fleet will make you feel more 2secure2 so mpost of the people here in a.net can claim that is not true of at least that it's not "completely" true. But for average joe they will feel more secure, and on other hands don'0t forget that usually the "modren" words has some type of atractive to people, like when a car manufacturer says that it's product it's the most modern at the time, same aplies for aircraft and passengers.

Ryanair claims the average age of it's fleet is just 2 years old!
I wonder if that is counting the 732's ?

If you would like to get more information about Airlines fleet age and what not, go to :

Early 2004, MEA claimed in its advertisements to have the youngest fleet in the world, early 2004, with 9 brand new aircraft : 6 A321 + 3 A332 :

Oldest A321 delivered Feb.14th 2003 (F-ORME).
Latest A321 delivered Nov.14th 2003 (F-ORMJ)

Oldest A332 delivered Apr.30th 2003 (F-OMEA)
Latset A332 delivered Jun.16th 2003 (F-OMEC).

At the end of Dec.2005, it gives MEA a fleet with an average age of 31 months, or 2 years 7 months.

Not so sure.

CO oldest 777 late 1998. Oldest 767 late 2000. Average age about 5 1/4 years.

SQ may have about the same age, not sure. Depends on how many older 744s are retired.

The airfleets.net fleet age thing is way out of date. They show Ryanair as having 8 B737-200's and just 83 B737-800's. I believe they now have 92 -800's, and all the B737-200's are gone.

Unless you're SQ, I think it's hard for any airline with a really large fleet to have a young fleet age without spending a huge amount of capital to constantly replace your aircraft. For example, think about AA with 300+ MD-80s. It's hard to fathom how much they would have to spend to replace all of them.

CO comes to mind as an airline whose fleet is pretty new across the board for an airline of their size.

Virgin's fleet is pretty young too. IIRC the oldest a/c is about 12 years old and due to leave the fleet soon anyway.

IIRC the average age is around 4-5 years.

How can you compare small airlines and large ones?

If tomorrow I started my own small company with 2 brand new leased aircrafts, would I receive a medal stating "airline with the youngest aircrafts in the world"?

Sounds terribly silly to me!  Smile

Middle East Airlines certainly went from OLDEST to YOUNGEST in a hurry, from wall to wall 707s, 720Bs (yes!!) and three 747-200s as recently as 1999, to A321s (short haul) and A330s (long haul) in the space of a year or two. To this day they have one of the youngest fleets of any national airline, but unlike other candidates, when they bought the current fleet they weren't replacing, oh say, 727s, DC9s, L1011s etc, they were replacing the kind of planes that would make Travolta want to get his chequebook out.
fly Saha Air 707s daily from Tehran's downtown Mehrabad to Mashhad, Kish Island and Ahwaz

As well MX with A319/A320 and B767.

MX has older A320´s, since 1991, the oldest is the 767 MXB, from 1985 (leased 2 years ago) hopefully it´ll be replaced by a newer A330, but the A319´s and the A318´s are new, the 318´s less than a year, that´s why their average went down.

MA has brand new 737NGs, but the F70s and the 762s are a bit older. Also the CRJ200s are only a few years old. They have much younger fleet in average like anyone else in this region. In average it's 4 years, but including the 13-years-old B762s!

GB Airways has got a very young fleet:
The airline now has 13 a/c, the first of which was manufactured in 2001. So the average age of the fleet stands somewhere at the 2 years mark.

I dunno, 9 just seems kind of high. Is there some link about their average aircraft age?

That's easy - start a new airline and buy 1 brand new aircraft - there you go you immediately become an airline with the world's youngest fleet!!! What does that mean? Nothing. Nobody cares about the age of your fleet - people care about presentation, service, safety and reliability. No use having a young fleet but having constant tech delays.

It's all a matter of perspective... If you buy used aircraft, then they are new to you, not new from the line. Same as young...

EZY fleet must not have more than 3 years old and for a consequent number of planes.

Lowcost have in the majority of the case a very young fleet.

Out of the 6 U.S. legacy carriers (UA, AA, DL, CO, NW, US), who has the oldest and youngest?

My guess is that NW has the oldest because they still operate DC-9s and DC-10s, and either CO or US has the youngest, and UA, AA, ans US are somewhere in the middle.

Hi Dalb777 you are right

according to aerotransport

United 10.7 years old
American 13
Delta 13.1
Continental 8.2
Northwest 17.4
US Airways 11

So continental the youngest and Northwest the oldest
