AirTran Suspending SRQ-LGA

Sat Dec 31, 2005 8:07 pm

Not sure if this seasonal or not, but airTran's last Sarasota-LaGuardia flight will be 17 February 2006. Looks like airTran didn't find a niche in the Sarasota-Northeast market. While they have done very well in Sarasota overall, SRQ-BOS quickly was downgraded to Saturday-only, and now SRQ-LGA is being suspended.

Also, on a Florida-related note, service between Richmond and Ft. Myers will become Saturday-only the same week.

Yea your right, I posted that about a week ago. Delta still has the CRJ daily and mainline on Sat to LGA. SRQ doesn't loose any frequency as MDW goes 2 times a day. So they are just positioning aircraft for the planned MDW expansion. Need to put airplanes where they will make the most money. It tough going up against JetBlue and Song on the BOS and NYC routes to Florida. Both those airlines drop a million seats a day into TPA and RSW at $88

Probably also trying to entrench into the Midwest as B6 looks to come on line to SRQ with E190s. Isn't that the scuttlebutt?

I'd just like to see CO add a second daily ERJ from IAH or upgrade it to 735 but leave it in the evening for western connections.

Given the fact that FL just pulled out and DL only runs a CRJ down there, how does CO do out of EWR to SRQ?

Since it ends Feb 17th it can't be seasonal as Feb-Mar-Apr are traditionally the strongest months between the NE and FLA.

Currently a mix of 2 daily 737's fly SRQ-EWR. SRQ had a few 757's a couple of days ago but I don't see any on the schedule for the future. They go up to 3 dailies in mid Feb. When I worked ops in SRQ load factor was above 97% year round. That doesn't mean they are making any money though. The reason for the uptick is that COA matches B6's fares to TPA and RSW. Anyone see the Hot Flash from Dec 19th? SRQ strongest fundamental growth in the USA.
Also on the 26th and 27th, we tried to get our crews into and out of SRQ, out of 8 crews (16 pilots) we were only able to fly 1 crew out. We had to fly crews into TPA and get cars because all flights were sold out. One fare was over $1400 on USAirways to TPA. Man that pissed me off. Anyway enough ranting.
So any inside info on Jet Blue to SRQ. Or is it just another midsize city hoping for them to arrive?

As long as AirTran keeps placing the a/c where money is made, I don't have much to complain about.

Instincts and a couple of things I've come across tell me that next year will be an interesting one for FL, in a good way.

I have a feeling we'll see Spirit in SRQ before JetBlue. JetBlue's stretched kinda thin at the moment, though the deliveries on new planes will help.

I hope AirTran has pulled this service because of a/c need and not because of poor flight loads. If it was flight loads they didn't even give this route a chance its been offered for what about a month or two. People are not aware of FL's presence on this route and I feel if they gave it time it would prove to be a more profitable route!
