Question Regarding Ramp Equipment

Mon Jan 02, 2006 9:11 am

I was browsing through JetBlue pictures and I noticed unusual ramp equipment. In the pic below, the plane in the background has something right in front of the engine which I have NEVER seen. Anyone know what it is?

Its pretty hard to make out. Looks like it might be a lift device for wheel chair passengers that cant make the steps since at some stations B6 uses stair trucks instead of jetways.

LGB like a few other airports does not have jetways. When you don't have a jetway and have to board using external stairs the A.D.A. (Americans with disabilities Act) requires that a lifting device be used to enplane the passengers. We used to be able to "hump" them up the stairs in a straight back wheel chair, but it was banned two years ago. There are many types of theses units, some only hold two people, and some such as the ones in PIE are basically a modified catering truck. Hope I helped you out.
Nice Trip Report!!! Great Pics, thanks for posting!!!! B747Forever
