AeroMexico Applies For CLE-MEX

Interesting! It will be great to see a new carrier here in CLE, especially a foreign one. Plus, with the Skyteam connections with CO (and others) it could be a win-win for everyone involved. Plus, the 73G will not overwhelm our tiny customs facility where a widebody may not do as well without careful scheduling amongst the carriers.

About time CLE landed a new carrier. Mok & Szabo are starting to earn their paychecks.

I agree and hope that the new administration thinks so as well. Beyond the fact that CLE has a sizable latino community, this opens up a much needed business route for local corporations that take advantage of NAFTA.

The flights are Charter only, to be operated on behalf of FunJet Vacations using 737-700 equipment.

MEX doesn't seem to be a typical FunJet destination.

agreed. ....and if it were a vacation charter, why wait until April and miss the entire winter season?

i originally thought that AM would be doing CLE-CUN this winter: RE: AeroMexico To CLE (by EddieDude Oct 9 2005 in Civil Aviation)#ID2371276

Well, there was a post not long ago about Aeromexico taking over for ATA/TransMeridian on the CLE-CUN route... but this looks like something different. Would be great to see regular service.

No, they aren't, they are scheduled. AeroMexico will (or has started?), IIRC, be operating CLE-CUN charters for Funjet. The reason they may be launching this service might have something to do with it, because flying CLE-MEX will allow them to position a plane in Cleveland, which can create more favourable schedules for CLE-originating passengers. The only reason they still fly to Boston is because they operate a BOS-CUN charter on a Saturdays, and the MEX-BOS flight positions the plane.

Good call on these being positioning flights to support the charters to CUN. Maybe MEX-CLE during the early evening, an early CLE-CUN flight with a quick turn back to CLE, and then CLE-MEX at night?

CO publicly talked about flying CLE-MEX in pre-9/11 days, but, like AMS, CDG, etc. nothing has come of it so far. It will be interesting to see if CO agrees to a codeshare, since CO usually like the long leg to be a CO flight. (Can't say I blame them.)

Well, maybe CLE-MEX will do better than DFW-MEX.

Friday is Mexicana's last day @ DFW, and now Aeromexico's last
day at DFW is February 5th.

This leaves only AA at DFW to MEX....and Jeff Fagen (DFW) and AA are
scared of Love Field and Southwest? Looks like AA and the cost
of DFW is running off business at a good rate...still no new International
Airlines beating down the doors of the new Palace D terminal.

Good luck to AM wherever they go after they leave DFW.

CO should codeshare on this flight and AM should codeshare on some CO routes ex-CLE. This might help too and could potentially allow AM maybe to go from 2 weekly flights to, perhaps 4 weekly flights at some point.

Really? I can't believe that! It sucks! I really enjoyed flying AM to DFW. And there were incredible promotional business class fares... I am going to miss AM's flights to DFW; maybe I should book a trip soon.

Quoting Mats (Reply 13):

The only U.S. SkyTeam hubs with non-stop service to MEX are IAH, ATL, JFK, EWR and DTW. CLE will soon have as discussed in this thread, and I must say that I am surpised it will be AM and not CO doing it. SLC used to have non-stop service to MEX operated by AM, but it is gone now. CVG, MEM and MSP do not have non-stop service to MEX at the moment.
Next flights: MEX-LAX AM 738, LAX-PVG DL 77L, SHA-PEK CA 789, PEK-PVG CA A332, PVG-ORD MU 77W, ORD-MEX AM 738

I notice that AM asked only for a ONE year exemption to operate the route; the DOT routinely gives two-year exemptions on routes such as this.

Maybe the one year matches the length of the CUN charter. It's strange, though. ¿Why not ask for two? There is no penalty for early termination of an unsuccessful route, and it will increase AM's legal costs if they want an extension.

Are they sharing a gate with CO or are they getting their own? CLE is packed gate wise.

While I do not know what routes would be good for those coming from MEX, I certainly think manufacturing center and resort destination connections for the CLE-MEX flights would be popular. How easy is it to connect at MEX?

I would imagine they will use one of the customs gates at the end of Terminal A for arrivals and maybe tug it to Terminal C for departures if A is too crowded.

I'd be surprised to see this one leave from C. If anything I'd expect them to tow the plane over to A-7 or A-9 if not depart from the customs gates.

Given the extensive amount of service between the US and Mexican resort cities, and the fact that many tourists pre-book via tour companies that place passengers on non-stops from the US (on scheduled flights or charters), there is not a huge amount of traffic connecting in Mexico City to Mexican resorts.

Right, except on peak season like Spring Break or perhaps long U.S. weekends. I recall flying between MEX and DFW in March 2005 with AM and most of the passengers were American tourists with connections to/from resort cities.

I suppose this all means AM will actually begin the CLE-CUN charters in April also. CO has delayed the return of their CLE-CUN flight until June. Must have been a nasty hurricane. If the charters are still planned for Wed, Thu, Sat, and Sun, I guess the MEX-CLE flights will be on Tue and Fri with CLE-MEX being either PM on Thu and Sun or AM on Fri and Mon.

Not a bad schedule, really; it gives business a couple of windows for short and longer trips and gives US tourists a nice long weekend in MEX.

I have seen some interior shots of the Marriott in Cancun and I was stunned at the severity of the damage caused by the hurricane.

That being said, it will be great to see CO start the CLE-CUN route at to get AM in CLE for the MEX and CUN routes.

While there are a number of people who book through tour companies, there are also a heck of a lot, such as myself, who prefer to stay away from the big tourist cities and the typical package tours. If the connections are good to the coastal cities and/or Central & South America, then this route has great potential.

Most of the big Cleveland companies have Mexican subsidiaries. There should be a fair amount of business traffic on the route as well - if two flights a week is enough to win it away from CO via IAH.

Very true. It may not be enough frequencies to wrangle a huge amount away from CO unless the cost and convenience differential is significant enough to warrant a jump. That being said, this new route opens up a lot more options for travel south of the border from CLE & hopefully will do well enough to increase frequencies. Does AM has enough 73Gs to make this a daily flight?

I do not believe there is regular service to MEX from these cities.

UA's website shows Flight 997 MSP 214P MEX 853P daily except Saturdays. MSP and MEX are in the same time zone - so a 6:39 flight sounds a wee bit too long... Is there a stop on the way?

Quoting Mbm3 (Reply 29):

Not at the moment, but with the new frames that are to arrive along '2006 there should be a chance of increasing this run to 4x or 5x week.

Enough 73W's and enough MD-80's. The thing is that AM will probably go very slowly... maybe adding more frequencies is not even seen as a possibility at the moment.

FWIW, counsel for AeroMexico today (Jan 17th) advised the DOT that there are no objections by other airlines to the award of CLE-MEX to AM. Thus, the route authority should be granted in fairly short order.

Great news!

The should have enough time to do some good advance marketing prior to the start of the route. It will be interesting to see if or how Mayor Jackson acknowledges the new service.
