N102DA And 'LAWA' 727 At ONT

Wed Jan 04, 2006 9:44 am

While dropping my grandmother off at ONT this morning, I noticed N102DA 'Spirit of Delta' at one of the gates. I don't think 762's are normal equipment for passenger operations at ONT; I'm guessing it was there for a Rose Parade/Bowl charter. Anyone know for sure?

Also, when driving past the old terminal I noticed a red and white 727-200 on the ramp, with what appeared to be the Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) logo on the tail. Anybody know what this aircraft is used for?

Thanks

Actually B767s have been pretty common for Delta ONT. DL's current schedule features a mix of 757 and 767s. If I remember correctly the summer schedule had 2 of 4 flights operate with 763s.

In regards to the B727, its used by LAWA for sublease to various film making organizations. You might be surprised but the airport gets an incredible amount of production work in its facilities. Everything from major motion pictures and TV shows to commercials and even music videos.
LAWA has kept parts of the old terminal and tower around to be available for such productions as well.

I noticed that bird when I was at ONT over the holidays...meant to post the question, but it slipped my mind. (Is it airworthy or ground-bound? Is there an interior or is it for outside looks only?)

In regard to the filming... If I'm not mistaken, doesn't LAWA* strongly encourage/force those wishing to film to ONT since they (from my understanding) don't want to deal with it at LAX (understandably since it's the much bigger and busier airport)

*- Is there an accepted pronunciation for this or is it always "Los Angeles World Airports"? I always want to go for "Laa Waa", but not sure if anyone else would know what I was talking about  Smile

Thanks for the info! I never would have guessed that ONT had enough demand to require 767s.

Ground bound, never been on the 727, however I hear it has a "partial" interior.

LAX gets a good deal of shooting also (TBIT being most popular), however much of it is on the backside of the clock during non busy periods.
Also the 105 Freeway west of the 405 is quite frequently used in movies and car commercials, which are often shot early in the mornings on weekends.

Most of us call it "Laa Waa" also...

"I always want to go for "Laa Waa", but not sure if anyone else would know what I was talking about"

It's probably the same for the DC airports. "M Waa" is what is commonly used for Dulles/National

I seem to see LAX used a lot more in movies and the like...the only thing I can recal seeing ONT used in was a Kanye West music video a few years ago, and that was at the new terminal (at least it LOOKED like ONT...I may be wrong).

The 727 at the old terminal is an ex-UA bird flown down from VCV, repainted to a dull white color, and stripped to unflyable condition (engines, and other critical things.) It's first role was to play the part of a 'waiting aircraft' in the many (yet few—thank God) episodes of LAX. After I left ONT, and LAX pulled the plug, LAWA bought the airplane solely for the purpose of production use. Since it's a white bird, it's easy to digitally enhance.

I think that LAWA also uses that 727 to train police for different aircraft situations.
