Bird Flu Outbrake Effect On UK Carriers

Thu Jan 05, 2006 9:39 am

Hey,

I just had a quick browse and never saw anything... so here goes.

Well, the time that Bird Flu was first found within the EU the UK PM said that he would close the UK's borders if the Deadly Human Strain reached Europe.

So far this has not been done, but for one does anyone think he will? And second, for the British Airlines struggling to make a profit, will they suffer so bad that they may go out of business.

I am talking about airlines like BMI, JET2 etc. with only really EU destinations.

I am struggling to think what really could happen, so can anyone help me with some info?

Thanks
Mike

P.S. I understand that this can be a difficult topic to read, i really do not mean any offense.

I can tell you that there are plans in place in many countries to close their borders to all modes of travel should the avian flu develop into a pandemic.

The financial impact will be into the multi billions.

I would imagine that the airline companies that operate close to the fringe will likely turn into a new colour scheme for the desert.

If the flu does mutate into a form that can pass human-human then not only will all forms of transport be suspended, but so will all public gatherings. Schools will close, football and all other sporting events will be cancelled, and most non essential work places will probably also be closed.

As a result a number of airlines will more than likely go bankrupt, but also a number of associated companies may also face financial ruin, airports, handling companies etc.

Yes, exactly.

But i assume UK Domestic routes and UK-US routes will not be cancelled?

Thanks
