Not quite sure where on the airfield it is, but the positions may be remote stands and passengers are bussed to/from the aircraft. (I had this in 2004 when I arrived from BOM)

By the look of things all these birds, EK and non-EK, are on this apron being cleaned etc in prep for their next or return flights. I'm guessing this because none have stairs at the front and back doors, which is most common for boarding. Secondly the busiest time at DXB is around midnight so I can easily beleive that there are this many birds sitting around.

I can't remember the last time I had to take a bus to catch a flight at DXB but I know it still goes on.

Just turnrounds on remote stands. I've been through DXB several times recently and these stands are increasingly busy as are those at the other end of the terminal - presumably EK now needs more gates than the current terminal provides (hence one of the reasons for the construction going on at the airport). I've also noticed that EK tends to use the number 2 door most often on these remote stands.

I was there in December. Do you like its terminal or do you think it's too over-the-top?

They need much more - a rumour I heard is that they may end up using DXB mostly for EK and JXB (or whatever code they have for Jebal Ali) for other airlines, by charging extortionate landing fees etc for DXB. Just to repeat, this is an unsubstantiated rumour but seems like a good idea and one that wouldn't be all that different than what goes on there now (how EK have priority on gates). But yes, not an unusual sight at DXB at the moment to see this many a/c parked up elsewhere.

Personally I think its one of the nicer airports - spacious, comfortable, good food outlets.... and should be even better when the other side is finished. Plus, walking one end to the other is a nice bit of exercise before an EK412 or other such long haul. Also the idea to put a hotel in the transit area... Marvelous!!

Quite strangely I had to take a bus probably about 6 months ago in DXB to board the a/c, during the Lions tour of NZ. Strange because (a) it was EK and (b) it was the A345 - thought they would have gotten priority. But yes I hear the buses are getting used regularly again.

BTW... Anyone able to explain what exactly terminal 2 at DXB is for? I see that Sri Lankan now operates out of there.

I was curious too so I checked it out, according to dubaiairport.com

"Most major airlines arrive at Terminal 1 of Dubai International Airport. Terminal 2 is used by mostly by airlines coming in from Iran, CIS countries and those operating chartered flights. Private jet owners and VIP guests make use of the Al Majlis or the VIP terminal."

Incidentally on this website the banner at the top scrolls through various images one of the outside of the terminal building shows a nice side on view of a QR 330, I wonder how they let that happen.

PS I wanted to go down to see the Lions get schooled by the All Blacks too but my slave driver boss would not let me go.

It could have been a Hajj/Umrah charter that was operating out of Colombo. AFAIK UL normally operate out of the main terminal, 1.

Probably in AKL... its crazy there now - almost a mini Dubai. Well not quite but not often you see a carrier other than QF or NZ with that number of a/c on the ground there. And in another thread it's been 'discovered' there will now be 4 a day in AKL........

And that's exactly what happened!! haha. Marvellous game in Wellington. Whops not aviation related...

This photo is taken around 7 or 8am, you can tell by the shadows. This is extremely busy period for EK. You will note that the second door is open open on most of the EK birds. This is the boarding door whilst off jetways. Last time i arrived at 6am the cabin display shows the list of connecting EK flights and i counted just on 40 flights departing between 7 and 1030am. European, Asian, African, NOrth America and Australasian long haul flights depart around this time as well as short haul flights to Gulf and Subcontinent picking up the connecting traffic. There are not enough stands at the current terminal to handle EK's let alone all visiting aircraft at that time. That's why there is that huge hole in the ground next to the current terminal, out of which is growing a huge new terminal and concourse...
